Gatling Layup Lifts Bowie State to 70-69 Come From Behind Victory at Holy Family

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Bowie State University men’s basketball got back on the winning track on Thursday night, defeating Holy Family University by a score of 70-69. Senior Ray Gatling (Oxon Hill, Md.) scored the game-winning basket with 4.7 seconds left on the Campus Center clock.

Senior David Golladay (Upper Marlboro, Md.) scored a career-high 13 points, all in the second half, on 4-of-5 shooting to go along with a career-high five rebounds. Fellow senior Carlos Smith (Baltimore, Md.) chipped in ten points and a game-high 14 rebounds, his second consecutive double-double of the season.

Holy Family is now 3-3 overall, while Bowie State improves to 2-3 overall with the victory.

Albert Munoz paced the host Tigers with a game-high 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Derrick Stewart recorded a double-double of 12 points and ten rebounds and added a pair of blocks. Ervin Ezell and Isaiah Gans contributed 11 points apiece.

The Tigers opened the game with a 5-0 run and held a lead until the 4:08 mark of the first half on a jumper by senior Donald Williams (Hyattsville, Md.), giving BSU their first lead at 19-18. Holy Family took the lead right back on their next trip down the floor and used a 9-4 run to close the first half with a 27-22 advantage.

Holy Family led 69-68 after a pair of free throws by Golladay pulled Bowie State to within one point of the Tigers' lead with 22 seconds left in regulation.  On the ensuing possession, the Bulldogs forced a key turnover in the Holy Family end of the court giving the visiting team a chance to take the lead with 14 seconds left on the clock.

Bowie State quickly ran down the court and called a timeout with 11 seconds showing.   Out of the timeout, Gatling drove through the lane scoring a layup between Holy Family defenders to give the Bulldogs a 70-69 lead with 4.7 seconds left.

On the inbounds play Holy Family got up the court quickly as Munoz was able to get a last second three-point attempt off before time expired.  However, the shot bounced off the rim as the Tigers last second attempt came up short.

In a game that saw only three different lead changes, the Tigers led majority of the way and by as many as eight points on two separate occasions in the second half.  The later coming with 3:15 remaining in regulation after Munoz drained a three-pointer to make the score 62-54.  The three by Munoz capped an 8-0 run after the game was tied for the first and only time at 54-54.

Both teams struggled from the field in the first half with Bowie State shooting 30.8 percent (8-of26) and Holy Family at 28.9 percent (11-of-38).  However, in the second half the Tigers came out firing shooting 55.6 percent from the floor on 15-of-27 shooting. The difference in the game was at the free throw line as the Bulldogs finished 19-of-22 (86.4 percent) where as Holy Family only converted 12-of-24 from the line.

The Bulldogs return home on Saturday (11/23) to host the Clippers of Concordia (N.Y.) College at 4 pm in BSU’s Leonidas S. James Complex (A.C. Jordan Arena). Most important cancer news you’ll see this year

Cancer Defeated Publications

This May be the Most Important Cancer News You’ll See This Year

I’m very excited about this issue’s article. Scientists may have discovered an important key – perhaps the key – to preventing and curing colon cancer. A natural plant extract available in any supplement store looks to be a potent “weapon of mass destruction” against colon cancer cells. And at first blush, I see no reason why it might not work against other cancers, too.
Let’s take a look at this exciting news...
Continued below…

The Golden Age of Antibiotics is Over!
The Golden Age of Antibiotics is over. For 60 years we have lived protected by these AMAZING drugs. Lives have been saved… Billions of lives.
True, there have been complications, but that's because of abuse, not because of the wonderful life-saving properties of antibiotics.
But it's over: resistant strains are emerging like wildfire. Now there are dozens of deadly bacteria, some resistant to all known drugs.
You need to learn about alternatives. There are many safe, effective traditional remedies, which were eclipsed byantibiotics, but they worked then and will work now.
Prof. Keith Scott-Mumby, one of the world's most advanced alternative MDs, has written a comprehensive guidebook detailing every single alternative to antibiotics. He's backed up every word with solid science. You need to get this book and read it, NOW…
Don't wait… bacteria strike within hours and can be fatal SAME DAY. Click this link and be ready to save your own life and that of your loved ones.

Colorectal cancer is a growing threat to modern populations, thanks to our sedentary habits and our addiction to processed-foods . Also known as colon cancer, rectal cancer, and bowel cancer, it stems from out-of-control malignant cell growth in the rectum or colon.
This cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the world and the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. It’s most often seen in modern countries that enjoy a high standard of living.
But even as more and more people fall victim to this disease, there’s good news on the horizon: a new study shows a simple substance known as grape seed extract (GSE) does a bang-up job of halting the growth of colorectal cancer cells.
And according to this study, the more vicious the cancer cell growth rate … the more effective grape seed extract is at thwarting it.
GSE: The “all-purpose” cancer killer
The study came from researchers at the University of Colorado Cancer Center and was published in the journal Cancer Letters. Molly Derry, lead study author, pointed out that they’ve long since known about the power of grape seed extract to selectively target cancer cells.
But here’s why the new findings are so interesting. When colorectal cancer cells metastasize and traditional therapies can’t beat them, the cancer cells actually become even more sensitive to GSE treatments. This means we now have a way, as Derry says, “… to selectively target advanced colorectal cancer cells.”
Here’s another humdinger: Typically, larger chemotherapy doses are needed to kill later stage cancers. A person suffering from Stage IV colon cancer is going to be treated with much more chemo poison than a person with Stage II colon cancer.
But when it comes to treating late-stage cancers with grape seed extract, less is more. Derry was quoted as saying, “It required less than half the concentration of GSE to suppress cell growth and kill 50 percent of stage IV cells than it did to achieve similar results in the stage II cells.”
The scientists working on this project believe the key mechanism that allows grape seed extract to do this is the oxidative stress it puts on cancer cells. This prompts the cancer cells to self-destruct, a process known as apoptosis or programmed cell death. But along with that, other bioactive compounds within GSE seem to work together to target the different mutations of the cancer cells. In fact, the more mutations the cancer throws at them, the more effective they become at knocking them out.
This is in sharp contrast to conventional treatments, which are constantly “outsmarted” by cancer’s ability to mutate.
Grape seed extract works better than chemotherapy because traditional chemo only targets a specific mutation. This is not an effective strategy considering that colorectal cancer cells can have more than 11,000 genetic mutations. So those cells can become resistant to chemotherapy but still remain completely vulnerable to the bioactive compounds in grape seed extract.
It appears that GSE can be characterized as a broad-spectrum mutation-targeting chemical – in effect, a “weapon of mass destruction” against cancer cells.
Got colon cancer of the worst kind? No problem.
A proven natural cure for beating an enemy like colon cancer is fantastic news, to be sure. But perhaps even better is the fact that these findings may prove critical in prompting more natural therapy use for late-stage colon cancer—especially since the burn and poison methods used in allopathic medicine don’t work all that well for older folks suffering from the disease.
Colorectal cancer usually hits older people thanks to the cumulative, long-term effects of lifestyle choices (bad diet, lack of exercise) plus the general toll of aging. Few cases are linked to genetics, and too few are cured, especially those that reach Stages III or IV.
Early symptoms of colon cancer include constipation, blood in your stool, weight loss, and appetite loss. Older males are the most at risk, as are those who eat a diet heavy with fat, alcohol, and red meat. Smoking and a lack of exercise only make your risk factor higher.
Until now, regular screenings (a colonoscopy) were the most effective way to lower your chance of dying from the disease. Most doctors recommend you get screened about once per decade once you hit age 50, and then all the way up until you’re 75. If cancer is found in your colon wall, surgery usually cures it. But if the cancer has spread, chemo tends to be the recommended option.
In general, folks who die from colon cancer are the late-stage cases who’ve had the disease spread throughout their body. But incredibly, this is where grape seed extract can make the biggest difference.
It works proactively, too…
Grape seed extract, as you’ve probably guessed, comes from whole grape seeds. These seeds carry a high level of vitamin E, flavonoids, and linoleic acid, among other things. You’ll typically find it in capsules or tablets of 50 to 100 mg each. Little is known about the effect of long-term grape seed extract consumption. Known side effects include headache, dry scalp, and the occasional bout of dizziness or nausea.
By the way, you don’t have to be diagnosed with colon cancer to start reaping the anti-cancer benefits of GSE. You can take it proactively to protect yourself against colorectal cancer and other digestive cancers.
Current recommendations from nutrition experts are to supplement with standardized, whole grape seed extract. Aim for between 150 and 250 mg per day. If I had colon cancer I would certainly take at least 250 mg per day, and I’d consult a naturopath about taking higher doses.

GRU Augusta Nips Bowie State 87-86 in Overtime

BOWIE, Md. – Bowie State University men’s basketball lost a heartbreaker on Saturday afternoon in its home opener, falling 87-86 in overtime against Georgia Regents University Augusta.

Senior Ray Gatling (Oxon Hill, Md.) scored a team-high 25 points and added four assists while fellow senior Carlos Smith (Baltimore, Md.) recorded a double-double of 24 points (career-high) and 11 rebounds in the setback.

Free throws were the downfall as the Bulldogs shot 54.8 percent (17-of-31) from the charity stripe. On the flip side, GRU Augusta was slightly better, knocking down 21-of-34 (61.8 percent).

The Bulldogs struggled making shots in the first half, hitting only 38.5 percent of its shots and trailed 36-27 at halftime.

Bowie State (1-3) shot well in the final 20 minutes, hitting 16-of-26 from the field (61.5 percent), which included 4-of-7 in overtime.

The Bulldogs went ahead in the opening minute off a dunk from Brian Freeman. A Ryan Weems (Miramar, Fla.) three pointer put the Jaguars (2-1) on the board and set the tempo for the offense. Weems ended the night with five from the arc. After missing a layup on the next GRU possession, Ronell Crockett (Anderson, S.C.) stole it back and drove the lane for a lead-taking layup.

Crockett's layup put the Jaguars ahead until the 16:58 mark. Bowie State's Gatling knotted the game at 38 with a 3-point bucket. KJ Sherrill (Cleveland, N.C.) grabbed an offensive rebound and got a tip-back basket to retake the advantage for Georgia Regents.

The Jaguars had a nine-point lead with less than five minutes to play when the Bulldog comeback began. With 14 seconds left in regulation, Carlos Smith (Baltimore, Md.) got to the free-throw line and sank both to force overtime with a 74-all score.

GRU scored first in OT with a Weems jumper, but Bowie State's Smith hit another 3-pointer for his 24th point. Weems showed off his range with 31 seconds left, hitting two treys in 13 seconds. Down by one, Keshun Sherrill (Cleveland, N.C.) hit a jumper to put him into double figures and gave Georgia Regents the lead. Gatling made it 86-all with a free throw, but Harold Doby got to the line for the Jags where he made one for the win.

Weems led GRU Augusta with 27 points and Keshun Sherrill along with D’Angelo Boyce (Annandale, Va.) chipped in 11 points each in the victory. KJ Sherrill hauled down a game-high 14 rebounds to go along with eight points, four assists a block and two steals.

The Bulldogs travel to Philly next Thursday (11/21) to take on Holy Family University in a 7 pm non-conference tilt before returning home to face Concordia (N.Y.) at 4 pm on Saturday(11/23).

Fight cancer with a high-fat diet

Scientists say you may be able
to fight cancer with FATS!

Ketogenic diets require you to cut most starchy carbohydrates and increase your intake of healthy fats and protein.
The diet makes your body enter a state called ketosis, where it burns fat-derived chemicals called ketones in the absence of carbohydrates. The diet is so rich in fats, most people will find it satisfying.
Now, if you’ve been reading this newsletter for long, you know we recommend a low-refined-carb diet for cancer prevention and treatment. And you also know we recommend healthy fats like those from coconut, avocado and nuts. Dramatic new proof of this view now comes from some studies that specifically studied the ketogenic approach. Here’s what they discovered...

Oliver was doomed to die from cancer
within 8 hours --
But then he found out what to do. . .
Oliver had reached the end of the road in his seven-year fight against cancer. His doctors didn't think this 32-year-old man would live through the night.

But when I talked to Oliver six years later, he was the picture of health! He got rid of his cancer completely.

Yes, Oliver found the answer — his own cancer miracle.

I sat down with him and his doctor and they told me an incredible story. . . a story that could help save you or someone you love from this dreaded disease.

If you'd like to hear it, click here now.

Since the 1920s, doctors have recommended the ketogenic type of diet for children who suffer with seizures. And many other folks have found this to be an enormously effective way to lose weight fast.
Ketogenic diets can also help:
  • Keep your body energized all day
  • Manage or prevent Type 2 diabetes
  • Stabilize blood sugar levels
Now researchers have discovered that ketogenic diets may also have a profound impact on curbing the growth of cancer cells in your body, too.
Various research groups have investigated this phenomenon. Here are just a couple of the studies that have produced intriguing results:
  • Adrienne C. Scheck, PhD led a team of researchers at the Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ.

In the study, mice with high-level malignant gliomas were either fed a standard or a ketogenic diet. Both groups received radiation therapy.

Dr. Scheck’s team discovered that animals fed a ketogenic diet had an increased median survival of approximately five days relative to animals maintained on a standard diet.

What’s more, nine of the 11 mice that ate a ketogenic diet and received radiation survived with no signs of tumor recurrence for over 200 days—even after switching back to standard food! In contrast, none of animals eating a standard diet survived more than 33 days.

The researchers theorized that the ketogenic diet may reduce growth factor stimulation, thereby preventing tumor growth. Barrow scientists also believe that it may reduce inflammation and edema surrounding the tumors.
  • Dr. Dominic D'Agostino, assistant professor at the University of South Florida, worked with a research team to remove carbohydrates from the diets of lab mice. They found that when mice received chemotherapy treatments, the high-fat diet helped them survive highly aggressive, metastatic cancer even better.

According to a CBN News report, Dr. D'Agostino has seen similar results in people as well. "I've been in correspondence with a number of people," he said. "At least a dozen over the last year-and-a-half to two years, and all of them are still alive, despite the odds. So this is very encouraging."
So what’s the secret to successfully fighting cancer with fatty foods?
Curb your carbs...cut your cancer risk...
and improve your health!
You might be aware that just like other cells in your body, cancer cells gobble up sugar to help them metabolize. In fact, cancer cells consume glucose at a far higher rate than do healthy cells.
But when glucose is lacking, other body cells can use ketones as an alternative fuel. Cancer cells CAN’T.
Because ketogenic diets drastically reduce dietary sugars, cancer cells literally starve to death.
Besides producing a breeding ground for cancer, high-carb diets also promote inflammation in your body. This can lead to a host of other health problems including:

  • Alzheimer's disease
  • Asthma
  • Allergies
  • Arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Osteoporosis

  • According to Dr. D’Agostino, the formula for a ketogenic diet should be about 75% fats, 23% protein and 2% carbohydrates. That’s a very low level of carbohydrates.
And it might be helpful to clarify what kinds of foods should be included in these categories. For example:
    • Healthy fats: avocado, butter, coconut and virgin olive oils, eggs, nuts; steer clear of manmade "trans" fats, such as shortening, margarine and hydrogenated oils
    • Healthy proteins: grass-fed meats, mackerel, lake trout and salmon; forget about processed meats, like cold cuts and hot dogs that often have carbohydrates added to them.
    • Allowable carbohydrates: less-starchy vegetables such as asparagus, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, lettuce, onions, turnips and spinach; avoid high-carbohydrate starchy vegetables like plantains, potatoes, pumpkin, squash, corn and peas.
If any of this looks familiar, it’s because we’ve been recommending the same kind of diet for years, for people who have cancer and want to get rid of it, or who don’t have cancer and want to make sure they stay that way.
The only quibble is that many renowned experts on alternative cancer treatment recommend a diet containing NO animal protein. I think this stricture is harsh and unnecessary. I lean toward more recent findings that moderate consumption of animal protein agrees with some people and disagrees with others. But there isn’t enough evidence to settle the matter.
When choosing nuts, keep in mind that almonds, cashews, macadamia nuts, walnuts and other tree nuts are all high in fat. But they contain healthy fats that won’t clog your arteries or raise your cholesterol levels.
What’s more, nuts are an excellent source of nutrition because they’re packed with copper, fiber, folic acid, magnesium, and vitamin E.
They also provide a great source of protein and no carbohydrates. Choose nuts that are raw and unsalted for maximum benefit.
If you choose to follow a ketogenic diet plan, you may find it to be effective at curbing sugar cravings…energizing your whole body…and keeping cancer cells at bay for years to come.
