(Mb FINAL) Bowie State 65 - #8 Virginia State 55 (Full Story and Stats)

Bowie State Bulldogs Upset #8 Virginia State Trojans 65-55

ETTRICK, Va. – Bowie State men’s basketball picked up a huge CIAA divisional win on Saturday afternoon, upsetting 8th ranked Virginia State 65-55. The win improves the Bulldogs to 3-1 in the Northern Division, 5-5 in the CIAA and 10-11 overall.

Sophomore David Belle (Hyattsville, Md.) led Bowie State with 16 points while sophomore Cameron Hayes (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and seniors Omari George and Dayshawn Wells (both of Baltimore, Md.) chipped in 10 points each in the key CIAA North victory. Belle also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.

Neither team could really get on track in the first 10 minutes of action, but Bowie State’s Bulldogs did lead 20-18 heading into the under eight-minute media timeout.

Bowie State led the majority of the first half, but Virginia State took its first lead of the game (26-25) at the 4:06 mark after a William Vedder (Washington, D.C) layup.

The Trojans closed the first half with a mini 4-2 run to take a 30-27 lead into halftime. Virginia State shot 42.4 percent (14-of-33) in the first 20 minutes compared to 43.5 percent (10-of-23) for visiting Bowie State. The Trojans also held huge first half advantage on the glass, out-rebounding the Bulldogs 23-9. In fact, Virginia State pulled down 12 offensive rebounds alone in the first half.

Bowie State narrowed the deficit to 37-35 and a Belle triple shifted the advantage over to the Bulldogs at 38-37 at the 15-minute mark of the second half. Following the media timeout, Belle knocked down a pair of free throws and followed that with a layup to make the score 42-37 Bowie State, forcing Virginia State’s Trojans to call a timeout.

Yohance Fleming (Bowie, Md.) scored his first points of the game on a little floater in the paint to continue the Bulldogs run.

VSU’s Lual Daniel Rahama (Newport News, Va.) stopped the Bowie State run but missed the free throw sending Bowie State into the under 12 media time out with a 44-39 lead.

Bowie State’s lead grew to a game-high 10 points (49-39) after a massive two-handed dunk by Hayes. The Bulldogs stifling defense made a major difference in the second of play.

Cyonte Melvin (Hampton, Va.) capped off a 6-0 Virginia State run to trim the Trojans deficit to 51-47 at the 6:37 mark. Melvin knocked down two free throws to cut the Bowie State lead to 51-51 with 3:19 remaining in the highly contested contest.

Bowie State held a 54-49 lead at the final media timeout (3:39) and pushed lead to 58-51 following a Fleming dunk.

The Bulldogs had enough in the tank in the end for the 69-55 upset of the nationally ranked Trojans.

Virginia State (17-2, 7-2 CIAA, 3-1 North) was led by Melvin and Richard Granberry (Chester, Pa.) with 11 points apiece. Granberry was Virginia State’s leading rebounder with seven.

The Bowie State men’s basketball will be idle until returning to action on Saturday (February 3rd) at Elizabeth City State. Game time in ECSU’s Vaughan Center is set for 4 p.m.

University of the District of Columbia Announces Hiring of John Nakpodia as Head Women’s Basketball Coach

May 10, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC – John Nakpodia was announced as Head Women's Basketball Coach at the University of the District of Columbia by Director of Athletics Patricia Thomas on May 10th, 2017. Nakpodia, an Assistant Women's Basketball Coach, Recruiting Coordinator and Video Coordinator at UDC since October 2015, replaces Juan Dixon, who was announced the new Head Men's Basketball Coach at Coppin State University.
"John has demonstrated a highly positive attitude towards work, a strong sense of integrity, and discipline. He communicates extremely well and is a proven recruiter. When I spoke with him about this position, he convinced me of his commitment to academics and compliance," Thomas said. "In addition, he brings continuity to our program and strong ties to the Washington, DC community."
A Washington, DC native out of St. John's College HS in Northwest DC, Nakpodia played a pivotal role his first year in helping then head coach DeWayne Burroughs steer the Firebirds to an East Coast Conference Championship Tournament Semifinals appearance, a 21-9 overall record, and a 15-5 East Coast Conference mark in 2015-16. The Firebirds boasted two All-ECC performers that season in First Team guard Tajruba Baldwin-Kollore and Third Team guard/forward Iman Scott.

Save the Children! Pump Iron?

It's pretty clear that the new generation, especially here in the Western world are poised to be one of the worst as it pertains to health and fitness.
Even though there are hundreds of fitness options available for your child and its pretty universal that your child's school system will not or cannot administer a sound science based program with limited physical education at said schools; we still have the growing epidemic of obesity, diabetes, heart issues and more in part due to a lack of activity geared towards increasing fitness.
It's up to parents, teachers, coaches, community and more to take it upon themselves to change the tide. I would like to offer my contribution in the form of a solid science proven fitness program designed for your child's needs. This Youth Fitness Program will custom designed for your child to meet him/her where she is now physically and slowly and gradually help them get healthier, stronger, and simply functioning like a healthy child should. The best part is I can do it for your family for about 50 cents per day!

Youth Strength Training
Youth Strength Training Programs are designed for overall health and the achievement of a leaner, stronger body. These programs are an excellent first step in helping a young person learn how to lift weights safely. Done correctly, and with adult supervision, weight training can be an excellent form of exercise that, once learned, can provide a lifetime of health benefits.

Throughout the length of the Youth Strength Training Programs, the manipulation of the sets and repetitions for each exercise will be based on periodization concepts that involve changing the intensity and the volume of the workouts. The weights are lighter and the repetitions will be higher for added safety!

As with all the programs, the starting point of the workouts are based on the child's initial fitness level. With feedback, the actual progression of the program will follow the child's unique adaptation process to exercise.

Fine tune the programs to include various exercises that can be matched to equipment at home or in the gym! In addition to strength training, encourage children to participate in their favorite sports for a well rounded fitness program. Have fun and get healthy!

University of the District of Columbia Announces Hiring of Kevin Murphy as Assistant Men’s Lacrosse Coach

Kevin Murphy brings vast lacrosse coaching experience to his role as assistant coach at UDC.
Kevin Murphy brings vast lacrosse coaching experience to his role as assistant coach at UDC.
WASHINGTON, DC – Head Coach Rodger Colbert has announced the hiring of Kevin Murphy as the Assistant Men's Lacrosse Coach at the University of the District of Columbia effective October 1st.
"I am thrilled to bring Kevin on in this role," Colbert said. "His acumen and passion will be his most utilized assets for our lacrosse program."
Murphy, who served as a Volunteer Assistant Lacrosse Coach at UDC this past season, will continue his duties which include assisting with recruiting, practices, and all day-to-day operations of the men's lacrosse program. Last year, Murphy helped steer the Firebirds to their highest win total (4) in the 3rd year program's history, including a conference win vs. Roberts Wesleyan.
While coaching at UDC, Murphy also held a lacrosse coach position at Madlax Inc., Washington, DC and an assistant junior varsity coach position at St. Albans School. At Madlax, he coached youth players on lacrosse fundamentals and created practice plans geared toward skill improvement. Meanwhile, at St. Albans he coached the defense, developed student-athletes to compete on the varsity level, and mentored student-athletes on lacrosse and academics.
Prior to his arrival at UDC, Murphy had various international coaching experience in different parts of the world including Germany, the United Kingdom and Uganda. For two years, he served as Head Coach of the Hannover Lacrosse Club in Hannover, Germany, and for nearly three years, he was the Assistant Manager for the Glasgow Clydesiders Box Lacrosse Club in Glasgow, UK. In his capacity as Assistant Manager for the Clydesiders, he played a part in establishing the first ever box lacrosse team in Scotland. Finally, he also served for a short time as a lacrosse coach for Fields of Growth in Kampala, Uganda, where he prepared the Uganda men's national team for the World Championships and helped fund-raise for the team as well.
A California native with a U.S. History degree in 2012 from Salve Regina University and a Masters of Science in History from the University of Glasgow, Murphy also had brief coaching stints at 4 Leaf Lacrosse – a high school travel team, Yorba Linda High School – where he helped lead the team to a Sunset League Championship, and his very own Murphy's Lacrosse Camp – which he organized, marketed and ran for youth lacrosse players in Yorba Linda, CA.
Murphy was a four-year lacrosse midfielder at Salve Regina University who registered 12 points on six goals and six assists and also accumulated 64 groundballs for the Seahawks from 2009-2012.
The Firebirds, under recently hired head coach Rodger Colbert, will look to improve upon their best season yet as they compete in the young program's 4th season in Spring 2017.

-Nate
Sports Specific Workouts

The Sports Specific Programs are designed to give people an exercise program tailored to the demands of their chosen sporting activities. All sports, from Golf to Football, have specific movements and physical demands that can be improved with proper training. The knowledge and experience that goes into each of these sports specific programs is what makes them so effective.

The most important attribute of any quality training program is injury prevention. Knowing how to start a program is the first step. These Sports Specific Programs provide injury prevention by first establishing a strength and conditioning base. The sets, repetitions, exercise prescription, and actual weight of the programs are based off an initial fitness level and specific strength to bodyweight ratio's. With simple feedback, the progression of the program will follow the body’s unique adaptation process to exercise.

In today's competitive arena, Basketball is a POWER GAME! The athletes are bigger, more powerful and faster. Whether the goal is simply to get in better shape and reduce injury risk, or to compete at a high level on the court, these programs will work. All the Basketball Programs take into account the specific movements and physical demands required to play the best game of basketball!

In the constant quest to provide quality programs there are different variations within each one of the major program goals. These variations are dependent upon how much equipment is available, and how aggressively the training schedule is.

Go To College With A Cheerleading Scholarship

Nate-@-Gilman-2.jpg
I am often asked by our athletes about Athletic Scholarship opportunities. Although I am hardly an expert on insider on these matters, I do know doing your homework will reveal opportunities that you may not have considered before. Check out Owen's article below:
-Nate

Go To College With A Cheerleading Scholarship

by Owen Jones

A major part of a good upbringing is a decent education. Parents have diverse financial resources but they also have different means of organizing their children's education. Some parents are better at it than others. Likewise, not all children want to become doctors or dentists, no matter what their parents would like and most of us thank God for that. Diversity is the spice of life, because luckily we are not all the same.

Paying for your child's higher education is quite another thing. The costs of higher education never seem to fall, in spite of the fact that there is a depression and parents are being laid off. State funding is also in question. Therefore, there is a huge pressure on the subsidies that are available.

If you are short of the necessary amount of money to send your child to college or pay for it yourself, you will have to use your best gift to try to gain a grant from private industry. You alone know what you or your child is best at and the best thing to do is to exploit that talent in order to attract a grant.

One of the kinds of scholarship that is often overlooked by the academically inclined is a cheerleading scholarship. If you can dance, if you are out-going and if you like showing off, you might get a cheerleading grant, even if you want to study pure or applied mathematics! Tangents off this variation are scholarships for gymnastics and track events.

There are four things to think about when seeking a cheerleading grant and they can all be made to begin with the letter 'W,' so that they are easy to remember.

First find out WHO is in charge of cheerleading in your school and if they know where you can go to get more information. If the coach in your school is not up to speed, go higher. Go over his or her head, otherwise you might miss out. If that does not work out, ask around for big local sports teams and write to the sports club directly.

Once you have the pertinent information about where the organizations are, find out WHAT they require from you. A good approach would be to look at old games and practice the moves that the cheerleaders perform in those games. Once you know the cheerleading moves from previous games, you will have demonstrated an interest in the club.

Find out whether the fund that you are applying to has limitations on WHERE you can be educated. Will you be restricted to the USA? If you want to study English in London, that will be a problem

Find out WHEN the application has to be sent in by. In other words, what are the deadlines.

There is a lot to do if you want a 'free education' no matter which way you try to obtain it. The point of this piece is to make you conscious of the fact that you do not have to only go down the road of applying for academic grants or even sports grants, things like cheerleading subsidies are also out there.

Let's be honest. Nothing in sports quite gets the heart pounding more than a game-winning shot. With the clock winding down, a potential game-winner can be the difference between heartbreak and euphoria. These five games taught us a little something about clutch shots and unbelievable finishes.

While the NCAA increasingly becomes a one-and-done league for players, individual rivalries, like Magic Johnson versus Larry Bird, are all but gone in college basketball. But the team rivalries continue to live on. Here are the five craziest in college basketball history.

Check out the best USA Today Sports Images from the weekend of Febrauary 26th through 28th.

There's nothing quite like a college football game, with 100,000 fans cheering along with their school's marching band. But some universities just have it better than others, like those with fight songs that get everybody on their feet.

The common misconception with mascots is that they only pump up the crowd. On the contrary, these lovable, yet crazy mascots create an atmosphere that helps schools build tradition and a loyal fan base. Sometimes their hijinx are even more fun to watch than the game itself.

The SEC is the best division in college football year-in and and year-out, but there's way to forget eight greats, who tore up the conference.
