Firebirds Men’s Lacrosse Earns Program’s Historic First Win in University of the District of Columbia’s First Home Game

March 15, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC – In the first lacrosse game ever hosted by the University of the District of Columbia, the Firebirds men's lacrosse team earned the first-year program's historic first victory, 11-6 over East Coast Conference foe Dominican College on Saturday, March 15th at Georgetown Multi-Sport Field.
Junior attack Ben Taylor (Biology – New Westminster, BC/Simon Fraser University) scored three of his game-high five goals and freshman standout Chase Fraser (Elementary Education – Aldergrove, BC/Blue Ridge School) assisted two of them while adding a goal of his own, all during the fourth quarter when UDC outscored Dominican, 5-1 to put what was a close game out of reach.
The Firebirds, who also got a hat trick from freshman midfielder Connor Lloyd (Architecture – Clifton, VA/James W. Robinson HS) and 15 saves by junior goalie Tom Yancheski (Sociology – Phoenix, MD/Harford), improved to 1-3 overall and evened its ECC record at 1-1 with today's win. Dominican, led offensively today by Sean McGregor's three goals, fell to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in league play. Goalie Matthew Quinones made 22 saves and allowed 11 goals in a losing effort.
Taylor scored the game's first goal near the midpoint of the first quarter, finishing right in front of the net off of an assist by freshman midfielder Josh Norton (Graphic Design – Eagle, Idaho/Eagle HS). A little over a minute later, Thomas Dertinger answered for Dominican to even the score at one apiece. With a little over four minutes remaining in the quarter, Norton added his own goal to put the Firebirds back in front, 2-1. They would take that narrow 2-1 lead at quarter's end despite a 16-10 shot advantage.
Less than two minutes into the second quarter, Lloyd tallied his first of three goals to give the Firebirds a two-goal cushion, 3-1. But back-to-back goals by Dominican's McGregor and Tanner Olsen in a span of under one minute  helped the Chargers pull even at the 12:29 mark.
A quick response by Taylor for his second goal of the game helped UDC re-claim the lead, 4-3, but that was the final scoring of the first half. The Firebirds doubled-up Dominican, 14-7 in shots in the second quarter (30-13 in the first half) but only managed a 4-3 lead at the break.
The Firebirds' shooting onslaught continued in the third quarter as the Firebirds out-shot Dominican 18-8, but once again they had little to show for it. Quinton Pavan (Childhood Education – Port Coquitlam, BC/Blue Ridge HS) scored the first goal of the third quarter at the 8:29 mark and Lloyd tallied the final goal of the quarter with 3:12 remaining off a Pavan assist. Dominican's McGregor and Theodore Wright each scored in between those two UDC goals to force a 5-5 tie before Lloyd's goal gave the Firebirds their fourth different lead of the day.
Lloyd's third and final goal of the day at the 9:13 mark of the fourth quarter set the tone for what proved to be a dominant final nine minutes by the Firebirds. During a span of less than three minutes, the dynamic duo of Taylor and Fraser combined for four consecutive Firebird goals as UDC took a commanding, 11-5 lead with 4:15 remaining. Dominican's McGregor tallied his third and final goal with 2:37 left to play to end the scoring, as UDC won by a comfortable five-goal margin.
Next up, the Firebirds visit Hood College on March 19th at 3:30 p.m.

UDC Women’s Lacrosse Announces Inaugural 2014 Schedule; Site of Home Games Moved to Georgetown

WASHINGTON, DC – Head coach Melynda Brown announced the inaugural University of the District of Columbia women's lacrosse team's 2014 schedule on Tuesday, February 4th. The Firebirds will host four home games which will be played off-campus at Georgetown University Multi-Sport Field.
UDC will play its first game in program history on March 6th on the road at Wilmington University (DE). The Wildcats, who compete in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACCC), were 4-13 overall last season but closed out the season with two wins, during which they outscored their opponents by a combined margin of 40-18.
The Firebirds then enter into East Coast Conference play with another road game at Queens on March 8th. After a 12-day rest, District of Columbia will host the program's first ever home game on March 20th vs. last year's ECC runner-up, Dowling.
UDC's next three games are on the road at ECC foes Mercy (March 28th), St. Thomas Aquinas (April 4th) and Roberts Wesleyan (April 6th). Following those three games, they host two consecutive games in the nation's capital vs. non-conference opponent, Georgian Court (April 10th) and league-opponent Molloy (April 13th).
On April 19th, the Firebirds will visit the two-time reigning NCAA Division II National Champions, LIU Post. The Pioneers were a perfect 20-0 last season (7-0 ECC) and are ranked No. 1 in the IWLCA Division II Pre-season Poll.
Brown's squad will then visit non-conference opponent Shepherd on April 26th and close out the season at home the following day vs. ECC foe Bridgeport.

Down to business. Off-season training rolling along?

This is the time of year that concerns me. It is only March turning into April and I see way to many football players, mostly high school and younger waisting their time doing essentially bodybuilding workouts. Please if you can get some help from a pro; you will not only give yourself a chance to play varsity, but more importantly get your body ready for the pounding. Mom and Dad don't really want to put healthcare reform to the test!

(Pictured) Nate (On the Bench) with training 'pahtnuh' the mysterious 'Biggie Shorty White'

Here is a suggested workout split for football, assuming training camp starts in early August:
Monday-Chest and Back

Wednesday-Shoulders, Biceps, and Triceps,
Friday-Legs. (The how and what can be acquired at US Sports Online Strength and Conditioning).

Tuesday And Thursday would be set aside for speed, agility, and quickness (SAQ) training. I know there is a movement afoot to try to do it all in each workout. Let me preface this next statement by stating that I am a certified strength and conditioning coach with 35 years experience. The combined strength and SAQ with cardio thrown in workouts are OK, but [which means 'zero' eliminating the previous statement] with the athletes that I have helped improve; who have focused during the off season on weight lifting on weightlifting days. SAQ on SAQ days have not only improved in all physical areas, but have in comparison avoided and recovered from injury faster than those doing the combo workouts now made popular by the crossfit phenomenon.

Not bashing the crossfit idea mind you just an informal observation.

So get to cracking now before the pads crack in August. Now I am aware of this little economic situation that many of you and your parents may be experiencing. Maybe a professional strength coach is not in the budget. So you may ask: Nate what can I do? Well there are many good resources on this 'internet thing' that are available to you. Ranging from free to a small fee.

So now you may ask: Well Mr. '35 years of strength coaching experience' what do you recommend? Funny you should ask! To help athletes like yourself or your sons or daughters, I started the US Sports Online Strength and Conditioning System. Click 'dat' link right 'der' and I can design and deliver your program online and you can take this guide to sports greatness....Ok at least getting into better shape for your sport, into your gym as early as tomorrow! Oh yes Mom, Dad, it is only $15 per month.
