Bowie State Easily Defeats Fayetteville State 64-50 in Women’s Conference Play

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Bulldogs women’s basketball team won their 10th consecutive game and fifth straight CIAA contest following Monday’s (1/9) 64-50 road victory over Fayetteville State University in the Capel Arena. Bowie State’s record now stands at 13-2 overall and 5-0 in league play.

Juniors Kyah Proctor (Capitol Heights, Md.) and Pere Alexander (Baltimore, Md.) paced Bowie State with 19 and 16 points respectively against the Lady Broncos. Proctor made nine shots from the field which included one three-pointer while Alexander connected on 5-of-8 field goals and knocked down 6-of-9 free throws. Fellow juniors Lisa Jing (Laurel, Md.) and Kiara Colston (Burtonsville, Md.) finished with 10 points each. Colston led Bowie State on the glass with six rebounds.

With Bowie State holding a 20-16 lead after one quarter, the Bulldogs defense held Fayetteville State to just one free throw in the first 5:15 of the second quarter and opened up a 27-17 advantage. A pair of Lady Broncos’ free throws by Kayla Phifer at the 3:57 mark stopped the Bulldogs run at 7-0 but Bowie State took a 29-21 lead into halftime.

The Bulldogs kicked it up a notch in the third quarter, extending to a double-digit lead (31-21) early in the third quarter following a pair of Alexander free throws and grew to a comfortable 54-34 advantage via a traditional three point play by Proctor with 1:13 left in the quarter.

Bowie State used a 10-1 burst and began to sub freely midway through the final quarter. The largest Bulldogs lead of the night (25 points) came at the 5:32 mark and BSU in charge by a score of 63-38. Bowie State made just one field goal, a 3-pointer by junior Renee Kydd (District Heights, Md.) with 1:41 remaining in the game.

Fayetteville State (3-11 / 2-4 CIAA) was paced by Yakima Clifton with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Breona Jones chipped in nine points while De’Aira Smith contributed eight points, seven rebounds and a game-high four assists.

As a team, Bowie State completed the game with a 39.7 field goal shooting percentage (25-of-63) and made 12-of-22 (54.5 percent) at the charity stripe.

Fayetteville State shot 36.4 percent from the field (16-of-44), which included just 1-of-10 behind the 3-point line and 17-of-31 free throws (54.8 percent).

The Bulldogs remain in the state of North Carolina for a rescheduled road trip to Raleigh to face Shaw University on Wednesday, January 11th at 6 p.m. in the C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
