TEMPLE HILLS, Md. - As we get older, we tend to forget the little things we do to encourage the youth to be the best they can be. Children are our future and we have to encourage them to do well academically in school and to participate in sports. When the Bowie State Bulldogs football team was asked to go to Hillcrest Recreation Center we were more than happy to volunteer our time. Our main focus was to ensure that the kids had fun.
Upon arrival, we had no idea what to expect from the kids, but the kids came in the gym with high energy. We started by introducing ourselves to the kids one by one. Each player said their name and position on the field, and then we started the kids with a little competition to see who could throw the football the furthest. After that, we broke the kids up into groups to perform some drills. Most of the kids were competing with each other with huge smiles on their faces. The most competitive activity was the relay race. Our visit ended with board games that the kids truly enjoyed as they plotted on how to beat us. They were telling us “You have to have a strategy in the game!”, so that’s how we knew they were smart.
We truly had a great time and they had us laughing and joking all day with their silly ways. The players told the kids that you have to work hard and maintain good grades in order to make it to college. We look forward to going back to the Hillcrest Recreation Center.
