BOWIE STATE’S CURTIS PUMPHREY NAMED CIAA DEFENSIVE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

HAMPTON, VA – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association released today the 2012 All-CIAA Rookie Team for football with players representing all twelve CIAA institutions. Livingstone College’s Drew Powell (Upper Marlboro, MD) and Bowie State’s Curtis Pumphrey (Forestville, MD) headline this year’s team as Offensive and Defensive Rookie’s of the Year respectively. The team is voted on annually by the CIAA Sports Information Directors’ Association.

Powell was voted as the CIAA Offensive Rookie of the Year after holding down the quarterback position for the Blue Bears this season. Powell completed 197 of 349 pass attempts (56.4%, 2322 yds.) and had connected for 18 touchdowns. He ranks 4^th in the CIAA in yardage per game (258) and 5^th in the CIAA in passing touchdowns (18).

The Bulldogs’ Pumphrey led his squad at the cornerback position. Pumphrey has picked six interceptions, topping the chart for the CIAA, and logged 58 tackles (40 solo, 18 assisted) and is also responsible for 12 pass breakups and two tackles for loss of four yards.

The Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Year will be formally recognized at the CIAA Football Championship Luncheon, scheduled for this Friday, Nov. 9 at the Raleigh Marriott Crabtree Valley hotel, 12:00 noon.
