VIRGINIA STATE BREEZES TO 9-0 WOMEN’S TENNIS SHUTOUT OF BOWIE STATE




PETERSBURG, Va. - The Bowie State women's tennis team had a tough time at Virginia State on Saturday morning and were defeated 9-0. With the loss, the Lady Bulldogs' record dips to 1-3 overall while the Lady Trojans improve to 6-0 overall.

The Lady Bulldogs were blanked 6-0 and 6-0 at No. 1, 3 and 5 Singles and lost 8-0 at No. 1 Doubles.

Freshman Antonique Johnson was defeated 6-1 and 6-2 by VSU’s Zaire Simmons at No. 2 Singles and sophomore Diara Mackey fell at No. 6 Singles by the exact 6-1, 6-2 score to Virginia State’s Kayla Kale.

Bowie State freshman Mieke Allen dropped a 6-1 and 6-1 decision to Sharmane Tonkins of the Lady Trojans at No. 5 Singles.

Virginia State’s Amanda Spencer and Simmons claimed an 8-1 decision against BSU’s Kassandra Bishop and Johnson at No. 2 Doubles. Mackey and Allen played tough at No. 3 Doubles but lost 8-3 to the VSU duo of Tonkins and Kale.

The Lady Bulldogs will take five days off before returning to the courts at the CIAA Round-Up hosted by Lincoln University of Pennsylvania. Bowie State’s first opponent will be on Saturday (3/16) as the Lady Bulldogs take on Livingstone College at 9 am.
