Q
HOW DID YOUR FITNESS JOURNEY BEGIN?
I was very athletic growing up and sports were ingrained in my life. I started playing basketball with boys at age 4 and went on to play every sport possible including volleyball, golf, basketball, softball, and track and field. I was determined to be the best at every sport.
Unfortunately, my dream of being a multisport athlete was halted before my sophomore year of high school when doctors said I needed back surgery. I couldn't give up what I worked for, so I convinced my surgeon to let me focus on one sport (basketball), which he allowed.
I pushed myself to get better, stayed after practice to take extra shots, and was in the weight room at 6 a.m. every morning on summer vacation. I wanted to be the best. I built a great work ethic, battled through two spinal surgeries in high school, never missed a game, and competed at the collegiate level.
My college career was sadly cut short due to continuous back complications, but I still craved a competitive edge. I graduated with a degree in kinesiology and marketing and moved from my small, Midwest town to South Florida, where I found a new passion for fitness after joining a kickboxing gym. I looked forward to the gym daily. I loved working with a trainer and putting on the gloves to hit the bag.
I was in shape but missed a major aspect of fitness: proper nutrition. I ate clean but wasn't eating enough calories to support the amount of energy I burned. I certainly wasn't eating enough protein to support my muscle either.
WHAT FITNESS REGIMEN DELIVERED THE BEST RESULTS?
I work with my trainer, Brian Beauvais, three days per week, focusing on legs, shoulders, and back. I focus on arms, chest, abs, and cardio on my own and do a full-body boot camp on Sunday. I do 45 minutes of cardio five days per week on the stepmill and treadmill.
"MY PASSION TO COMPETE WAS SKY HIGH AND I NEVER FELT BETTER. I SAW CHANGES IN MY BODY WEEKLY WHICH DROVE ME TO REACH MY TRUE POTENTIAL."
HOW DID YOUR PASSION FOR FITNESS EMERGE?
Being fit has always been a big part of my life. It wasn't until I decided to compete last year that I really saw the results of my hard work. I spent countless hours lifting and doing cardio before but never saw a change in my figure. When I met with my trainer, he helped me through the options for my body. Through the support of my trainer and family, I stuck to a strict regimen of eating clean and training. My passion to compete was sky high and I never felt better. I saw changes in my body weekly which drove me to reach my true potential.
"BEING COMFORTABLE WITH MYSELF IS THE BEST MOTIVATION. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HOW I FELT BEFORE AND AFTER MY COMPETITION WAS UNBELIEVABLE."
WHAT OR WHO MOTIVATES YOU TO LIVE HEALTHY?
I'm motivated by the way I look and feel when I train for a competition. Being comfortable with myself is the best motivation. The difference between how I felt before and after my competition was unbelievable. I ate clean and trained hard for 12 weeks. One night of splurging on pasta and ice cream after the competition was enough to know that I never want to feel like that again.
WHERE DID YOU GO FOR INSPIRATION?
I go to "Fitness RX" and "Muscle & Fitness Hers" when I need inspiration. I always have them in my gym bag. If I ever feel like going home rather than hitting the stepmill or weights, one look through those magazines gets me fired up.
WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE FITNESS PLANS?
Training for my first bikini competition was amazing. I loved eating clean and training daily and can't wait to compete again. Competing at the pro level against amazing athletes will be an experience of a lifetime. It's my dream to make fitness my career.
WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FITNESS TIP?
My favorite fitness quote is: "There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when it's convenient. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results."
Being fit is a lifestyle and a true commitment to yourself. The only person you can do it for is you.
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE FITNESS COMPETITOR?
My favorite bikini athlete is Amanda Latona. I admire her physique and incredible muscle tone. I will strive to continue improving the way she does for every competition.
HOW DID BODYBUILDING.COM HELP YOU REACH YOUR GOALS?
I use BodySpace to track workouts, diets, goals, and struggles. It holds me accountable and lets me see how others work toward their goals. It's motivating during prep to know there are athletes with the same goals as me.
Do you want to possess a stronger and more beautiful body? Then your most important step is access it you and start doing the resistance training.
What's Strength training?
Strength training involves activities that use weights, machines and even bodyweight to work out the muscles properly. It's also referred to as strength training or weight training. This can be very helpful in achieving a healthier body.
This kind of training is usually related to athletes who have to develop their health. Most people would believe that when strength training is done, the body will grow bigger. Actually it won't. Resistance training is merely about increasing the strength of the body, not its size.
Actually, this can be practiced by anyone. It basically builds and tones the muscle to provide your body a better look. This training course is even greatly advisable towards the elders. The usual training programs undergone by the elders are standing free-weights resistance or the moderate-intensity seated machine training.
So how exactly does Resistance training Work?
A strength training program will include the use of various digital cameras and machines like the bench press, dumbbell or barbell. When the devices are used, the muscles from the body is going to be pitted from the weight. Cells of the body will then adapt to the extra weight. This will then lead to hypertrophy or even the enlarging and increasing from the nerve cells to aid in the muscle contraction.
Before doing any resistance training, it will be better to consult first with the doctor. It goes especially for people who have medical conditions or are overweight. This kind of training is not something that you can explore by yourself. You need to know the correct equipment for the needs of the body. Your body must also be conditioned first before taking in the weights.
Strength training can also be done without resorting towards the equipment. Doing push-ups is one good example. You can do it almost anyplace where there's enough space that you should move. This time it's your own bodyweight that'll be pitted from the muscles. So those who are a bit constrained within the budget can continue to do resistance trainings.
What Are the benefits of Resistance training?
1. Increase Bone Mineral Density
Bones are constantly remodeling, meaning the tissues break up at the same time they build up. The peak of remodeling takes place during puberty. However, as a person ages, there might be problems with the bone mineral density as the remodeling may not be as active anymore. This is particularly a problem to post-menopausal women.
Bone mineral density is usually supported by the hormones. To deal with the problem of lacking the endocrine system to keep the bone mineral density, physical activity may be the next smartest choice. Strength training is one exercise that may address this.
2. Increase Strength
Strong bones and strong muscles is going to be developed while you undergo the strength training program.
3. Boost the Selection of Activities
Whenever your is strong enough to transport some considerable weight, then definitely additionally, you will manage to doing more strenuous activities. You are less likely to be lazy and you will live a far more active lifestyle.
4. Slow up the Body fat
Pitting the weights in your muscle will certainly provide the body the exercise it requires and eliminate undesirable fats. Thus expect a dark tone of the body to enhance. Much more, expect the body to appear better, to be leaner.
5. Improve State of the Elders
For that elderly, undergoing a resistance training program can help improve their health and decrease the risks brought about by age. They can be more independent, without having to rely on other people for doing simple things. Being able to do so will also decrease the chance of injuries in the elders
6. Reduce and eliminate Heart problems
Regularly doing strength training can result to some lowered heartbeat and lowered blood pressure level, especially after exercise. The risk of heart diseases is reduced to some considerable extent.
This kind of training however must be properly done. It requires commitment and consistency. It will have to be completed in a regular basis, carrying out a schedule how the doctor or even the physical trainer would recommend. If done incorrectly, the benefits of the program might not be enjoyed also it can even result the injury.
The key here is to simply take your time. Do things one step at any given time correctly. As the body condition improves, then move on to more challenging tasks. The effectiveness of your body and its overall look are at stake in the resistance training. So you better be sure to get it done properly.
One guarantee in life is that it will never be trouble-free. Whenever issues arise, we can take courage in knowing that God is always available to help us. In ancient times, He promised Joshua that He would never abandon him. We have that same promise because of the grace God offers those who trust Him.
It’s comforting to know that God will always be with us when we need Him. His mercy was evident even when the children of Israel repeatedly disobeyed and sinned against Him. He forgave them when they repented and turned their hearts back to Him. He gave the Law of Moses, but He gave it out of love.
God made a powerful statement professing His love for us when He sent His Son, who was the mirror image of the Father, to earth as a permanent sin-offering for us. Jesus gives us the opportunity to become children of God. This is amazing, because now we can be as righteous and holy as He is. Because of His unmerited favor toward us, Jesus made it possible to live a victorious and powerful life on earth, and have eternal life with Him in heaven.
In our daily lives, problems can pop up at any time, but we don’t have to face them on our own. God is our Rock; without Him, life would overwhelm us. The image of a rock that can dash us to pieces can be frightening to those who refuse to trust God for their safety, but the message to believers is that His grace keeps us from drowning when the storms of life hit.
Prayer:
Lord God, You’re always with us, even during our worst times. You love us so much that You refuse to turn Your back on us when we sin; You instead offer us mercy and forgiveness. Thank You for delivering us from trouble when it hits. In Jesus’ name, amen.
“Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world” (1 John 4:17).
We can have confidence in our right-standing with God when we accept Jesus into our hearts. We are just as He is because our spiritual nature has been recreated.
BE FREE FROM FINANCIAL LACK
by Creflo Dollar |
Struggling with financial lack is an accepted way of life for most people. Trying to stretch our money far enough each month to pay all the bills, and juggling which ones get paid first and which ones can wait, is stressful and discouraging. Having enough money to live comfortably can seem like an elusive dream. However, God’s will for our lives is abundance in all areas, including in our finances.
The world is in bondage to depleted budgets, insufficient income, and maxed out credit cards. We may find ourselves wondering how we’ll make ends meet, how to scrape together enough to put gas in the car and food on the table, and how to keep the lights on. We mustn’t be deceived—God doesn’t want us to sweat and struggle living paycheck to paycheck. Believing this allows Him to bless us, and our bank accounts, abundantly.
God is well aware that we need money, and He doesn’t want to see us broke and penniless. But our earthly desires can betray us if we’re tempted to seek money over everything else. We mustn’t get our priorities backward. When we seek Him, first, everything else will fall into place. “For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:32, 33, NIV).
We need to visualize in our mind’s eye that we already have the financial resources we need. Prosperity is part of the finished works of Jesus; therefore, we can begin thanking Him for what we’ve already received by faith. God always keeps His promise to bless us financially, but we must use wisdom. This means handling money responsibly by paying the bills, balancing the checkbook, establishing a household budget, not relying too heavily on credit, and giving generously.
A spirit of generosity has no relation to our bank account. The Bible story that teaches us to trust God and give out of faith uses the example of a woman who put all she had into the offering plate in the temple, despite the wealthier people making much larger donations. When Jesus saw this, He made note of it. “Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on’”(Mark 12:43, 44, NIV).
The world doesn’t think this way about money management, and the devil would prefer we stay poor and continue to struggle. But God transforms our minds and teaches us to think differently about money, so that we can stand out from everyone else. If we keep the proper perspective and attitude when we ask Him for financial blessings, we position ourselves to receive what He wants us to have. “And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it” (John 14:13, 14, NIV).
If we’ve been born again, we never have to wonder if God’s promises extend to our wallet. He has more than enough to meet whatever needs we may have. “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus”(Philippians 4:19, NIV). Our heavenly Father will never leave us lacking in any area.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – CIAA Defensive Player of the Year Kyaja Williams stepped up big on offense to give nationally-ranked Bowie State an improbable win.
Williams produced 12 points and 10 rebounds including a layup as time expired to give Bowie State a 48-47 women’s basketball quarterfinal victory over Johnson C. Smith in the CIAA Tournament at the Spectrum Center on Thursday (2/27). Her basket capped a furious rally for the Bulldogs, who trailed by 10 points with two minutes left.
The Bulldogs (23-4 overall), seeded third in the Northern Division, will square off against Northern Division top seed Virginia Union, the two-time defending conference champion, in a semifinal matchup on Friday at 3 p.m. This will be the third meeting between the two CIAA titans, but everybody’s mind was on how Bowie State pulled out the win against Johnson C. Smith, seeded second in the Southern Division. Both BSU and JCSU split during the regular season.
The Golden Bulls (17-10 overall) kept the Bulldogs, ranked 25th in the D2SIDA National Poll, at bay much of the game. It appeared JCSU was about to finish off its opponent when All-CIAA player Le’Zarea Bowens scored on a layup for a 47-37 lead around the two-minute mark.
The situation was bleak for the Bulldogs, but they suddenly came to life, finishing the contest on an 11-0 run capped Williams’ layup. During that stretch, the Bulldogs forced several turnovers that aided their rally. For the contest, they scored 24 points on 27 Golden Bulls’ miscues.
“We turned it up the last two minutes of the game and played with some heart,” said Bowie State Head Coach Shadae Swan, who gained her 100th coaching victory. “We started slow, and I believe reality set in the fourth quarter that we were losing. We were able to get some stops on defense and score on offense.”
After JCSU was called for a charging foul, the Bulldogs inbounded the ball at midcourt following a timeout. They missed an open layup on their first attempt put retained possession after the ball went out of bounds with 2.2 seconds left.
Williams was posting her defender when she received the in-bound pass in the paint. After spinning inside near the goal, she lofted the ball softly over the rim. It bounced a couple of times before falling through, setting off a celebration on the Bowie State bench.
Williams saw no irony in scoring the winning basket even though she is well-known for her defensive prowess. She sees herself as total player, capable of producing on offense and defense.
JCSU Head Coach Stephen Joyner, Jr. says her mindset is why she came through for the Bulldogs at the end. He lamented the fact that the Golden Bulls let the contest slip away after leading nearly the entire game. The final score was Bowie State’s first lead since a 5-4 score early in the first period.
“We choked. Bottom line,” Joyner said. “I don’t know how else to explain it. I take full responsibility for it. Hats off to Bowie.”
Talanya Hutton added 11 points and Chyna Butler scored 10 points for the Bulldogs, who won despite shooting 29.9 percent from the floor. Bowens tallied a double-double for JCSU with 17 points and 12 rebounds and Aubriana Bonner added 13 points. Alexxus Sowell collected 10 rebounds for the Golden Bulls, who shot 38.3 percent.
Bowens posted seven points and six rebounds in the first half as the Golden Bulls charged out to a seven-point first period lead and stretched it to 21-12 at halftime. The Golden Bulls relied on defense to build a working margin, holding the Bulldogs to 16.1 percent shooting.
JCSU shot 46.2 percent in the first period to set the tempo, but both teams cooled off considerably in the second period. Both teams combined for three field goals as the Bulldogs shot 12.5 percent and the Golden Bulls made 10 percent of their shots.
Bonner added five points for the Golden Bulls in the first half. Hutton scored four points and Williams pulled down 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs.
The second half was all Golden Bulls until the last two minutes when Bulldogs started their late rally.
“We had to keep pushing,” Butler said. “The game is not over until the fourth quarter is over.”
The Bulldogs proved that.
