Scottsdale Saguaro achieved its highest national ranking in history at No. 10 by USA Today, before even playing a down this football season.
But that took a hit, along with its Arizona Republic No. 1 Super 10 ranking, in San Diego on Saturday night with an 18-10 loss to Cathedral Catholic in what was the marquee game in the lineup of Honor Bowl matchups.
Earlier Saturday, Phoenix Desert Vista (1-1) lost to Sherman Oaks (Calif.) Notre Dame 37-35 on a 33-yard field goal as time expired.
Saguaro (1-1) went to California with the state's largest contingent of Division I-offered players (19), led by a loaded senior class that has eight with Power 5 conference offers, led by five-star cornerback Kelee Ringo.

But the Sabercats could only muster one touchdown, a week after blowing out San Tan Foothills Poston Butte 63-0 in their opener.
"There’s no doubt that it hurts, because we invested a lot of time, effort, and energy into trying to win that game," coach Jason Mohns said. "But at the end of the day, it doesn’t change our goals for the season.
"We learned a lot about ourselves last night, and what we need to do going forward to get better."
Saguaro still has a shot at Arizona's Open Division, pitting the eight best football teams among 6A, 5A and 4A in a state-championship bracket. Computer rankings will take into account all games and strength of schedule.
Cathedral Catholic is one of the top teams in the San Diego area. It was coming off a 42-9 win over Carlsbad (Calif.) La Costa Canyon in its opener, and will take on California powerhouse Corona Centennial next week. The Dons entered the Saguaro game ranked No. 38 nationally by MaxPreps and 12th in California.
Saguaro had only three points through three quarters — a Parker Lewis 32-yard field goal with six minutes left in the second quarter for a 3-0 lead.
Tyler Beverett was intercepted twice, the second of which set up Zavien Watson's 22-yard scoring run that gave Cathedral a 12-3 lead four minutes into the second half.Beverett drove the Sabercats down and scored on a 1-yard run to cut it to 12-10 with 11 minutes left in the game.
Cathedral Catholic consumed nearly seven minutes, before extending its lead to 18-10 with a  short scoring run.
Beverett's 21-yard run moved Saguaro to the 9 with a minute to go. On fourth down at the 4, Saguaro wasn't able to convert and Cathedral Catholic ran out the clock.
"Hats off to Cathedral, they are a heck of a team," Mohns said. "We made too many mistakes to beat a team of that caliber. But I was proud of our kids for fighting through some adversity and giving ourselves a chance at the end."
Saguaro, the six-time defending state champion (five of those coming in 4A), will hit the road again next Saturday to take on Faith Lutheran in Las Vegas in the Polynesian Bowl at Bishop Gorman.
