Mater Dei stays focused, sprints past Villa Park behind Bryce Young

SANTA ANA — The argument that Mater Dei’s top-ranked football team is more focused this season gained traction against Villa Park on Saturday.
The Monarchs stayed composed for a few minutes waiting for the No. 7 Spartans to take the field at Santa Ana Stadium and then scored seven first-half touchdowns en route to a 63-7 victory in the rescheduled game on a holiday weekend.
“We’re dialed in. We’re locked in,” said Mater Dei quarterback Bryce Young, who passed for four touchdowns and ran for another. “This was a good win. We’re going to enjoy it, but we have a tough one in Arizona next week (against Centennial of Peoria).”

Saturday’s game was moved back two days because Villa Park’s activity was suspended six days by the CIF-SS because it violated a rule by holding off-site practices in Big Bear.
“I wanted (this) game on Thursday to be honest with you but it didn’t work out,” said Mater Dei coach Bruce Rollinson, whose team departs Sept. 5 for Arizona. “I don’t think I’m going to have problems with (their) focus for the rest of the year.”
Young and wide receiver Josiah Zamora sparked the two-time defending national champion Monarchs (2-0) in the first half against Villa Park (0-1).
After the Spartans forced a fumble on the opening possession, Mater Dei scored on five consecutive drives and led 49-0 lead at halftime.
The USC-committed Young completed 16 of 21 passes for 301 yards and four touchdowns in the first half. The senior didn’t throw a pass in the second half before the Monarchs went to their bench.
Young threw two touchdowns to Kody Epps and two to Zamora.
Mater Dei also received rushing touchdowns from running backs Quincy Craig and Marceese Yetts.
