Bowie State Pressure Too Much for Chowan in Bulldogs 68-66 Home Finale Win
BOWIE, Md. - The Bulldogs used pressure defense, a Chowan miscue and free throws when it counted in Saturday's 68-66 home finale victory over the visiting Hawks. With the win, Bowie State’s fourth in a row, the Bulldogs improve to 16-10 overall, 12-3 in league play and 6-2 in the division.
“We’re not playing pretty basketball right now but we’re finding ways to win”, said a very happy Bowie State Head Coach Darrell Brooks. “There are things we certainly have to work on … free throw shooting and taking care of the basketball. We wore them down with pressure in the second half and I thought our heart showed through, especially in the second half.”
Junior Rinardo Perry paced the Bulldogs with a team-high 16 points and sophomore Keith Duffin, Jr. recorded 11 points. Junior Saiquan Jamison hauled down a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with eight points.
Bowie State trailed most of the first half but shot fairly well, hitting 46 percent of its shots (12-of-26). The Bulldogs did hold an 8-5 lead after a Duffin 3-point play at the 17:55 mark of the opening half before relinquishing that advantage to the Hawks after a pair of free throws by Chowan’s Timothy Bing at the 13:07 mark.
Chowan (12-12, 5-10 CIAA, 2-6 North) pushed its lead to 29-19 with 6:26 left before halftime. Chowan was outscored 13-8 the remainder of the half and trailed the Hawks 37-32 at intermission.
The Bulldogs closed the gap to 41-40 five minutes into the second half and tied the game at 46-all following a layup by sophomore Justin Route at the 13-minute mark. Bowie State used a 10-1 run to extend its lead to 56-47 after a Perry layup with 9:10 to go in the contest.
With Bowie State leading 58-50 at the 7:08 mark, the Bulldogs offense went cold, and Chowan used an 11-0 run to regain the lead at 61-58 with 2:28 left on the clock.
Perry sank a pair of free throws to pull the Bulldogs within one only to have the Hawks push their lead to 64-60. Jamison made 1-of-2 free throws and junior Cameron Hayes drilled a 3-pointer with 1:02 remaining, tying the game at 64-all.
Chowan’s Trejvon McFail gave the Hawks a two-point lead (66-64) with 29 seconds left after driving to the basket but Bowie State’s Duffin evened the score at the free throw line with 15.9 seconds left in the hotly contested game.
On the ensuing in-bound, Chowan was facing a five second in-bounds call and called a timeout after using their final timeout on the previous possession. Bowie State was awarded a technical free throw and took the lead 67-66.
Chowan had a chance on the final possession, but the attempt was blocked, and an offensive foul was called.
Perry went 1-2 from the stripe to seal the 68-66 win.
Chowan’s Demetrius Sanders was the games’ leading scorer with 18 points and Michael Kelly and Xavier Young tallied 14 and 11 points respectively for the Hawks.
Bowie State will hit the road for a rematch with division leading Virginia State next Wednesday (February 20). Game time is set for 4:05 p.m. and will be carried on ESPN3.
BOWIE, Md – The Bowie State University women’s basketball team picked up their fourth straight win after rolling through Chowan University, 65-45 at the A.C. Jordan Arena on Saturday afternoon. With this win, BSU improves to 20-4 overall and 12-3 in the CIAA, while Chowan moves to 12-13 and 8-7 in conference matchup.
Redshirt senior Pere Alexander had a monster game, leading all scorers with 23 points to go along with eight rebounds and five steals. Junior Kyaja Williams had a solid game with another double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. She also had four steals, was perfect at the foul line (3-of-3), handed out three assists, was credited with four steals and blocked one shot.
Danielle Weldon had a huge game for the Hawks, scoring 20 points to go with her 10 rebounds. Weldon was the only player in double figures for Chowan and their lack of offense cost them the ball game.
Alexander’s layup tied the game at 2-2 after Weldon’s jumper opened the scoring at 8:58. The Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run during the first period and held Chowan to just six points. Weldon was the only offense for the visiting team. During BSU’s run to end the period on top 12-6, junior Dynaisha Christian converted two layups, while the team forced four turnovers.
Freshman Drew Calhoun opened the scoring in the second period with a 3-pointer, but Chowan’s Weldon answered with a layup to cut the lead to 15-8 at 9:22. Junior Shawnkia McCallum’s three pushed the lead to double figures and right after the media timeout, Calhoun hit another three to take the lead up to 13 by the 6:57 mark. BSU quickly put the game out of reach scoring nine points in the final 4:55. Williams’s tip-in with 14 seconds left sent the Bulldogs into the half leading 37-17.
Olivia Gaither’s layup commenced the scoring in the third period, but Christian answered with a layup of her own to extend the Bowie State lead to 39-19 with 9:13 left in the game. Every time Chowan’s offense started coming alive, the Bulldogs had answers.
Weldon continued to add on her stats in the fourth with a layup at 9:33 and after Jordan Pettaway’s turnover, Williams punished the Hawks with a layup. Alexander’s jumper followed by Butler’s layup and McCallum’s jumper built the Bulldogs biggest lead at 61-35 before Brianna Copeland ended the mini run with a jumper at the 4:48 mark. Another Weldon layup follow by a Coker triple, cut the Bowie State lead to 19, but the Hawks would get no closer.
Bowie State dominated Chowan in just about every major stat category except rebounds. The Bulldogs shot 43 percent from the field (23-of-54), made 89 percent of its free throws (16-of-18), outscored the Hawks 32-20 in the paint, converted 11 Chowan turnovers into 21 points and outscored the opponents bench 17-8.
The Bulldogs head to Virginia State for a 2:05 tipoff against the Trojans next Wednesday (February 20) then close the regular season at Elizabeth City State on Saturday (February 23).
