The dashcam was taken early Dec. 10 at a truck stop on 76th Street in southern Kent County. Two Kent County sheriff’s deputies approached the vehicle after learning it was stolen and identifying two people inside who were wanted for impostoring gas station managers and tricking station clerks into giving them cash from registers. Police are still looking for Tauna Parfait, 33, and Bradley Johnson, 33, and say warrants have been issued against them in three courts. The dashcam video shows one deputy breaking a car window after two people inside refused to comply with commands. The driver, believed to be Johnson, drives forward and rams a police cruiser blocking his path before backing over a steep embankment to escape, with the tires squealing all the while. Police said the cracking sounds in the video are the window breaking and the bumper on the getaway car impacting the embankment. One deputy tried to draw a Taser but did not deploy it. A deputy then climbed into the damaged cruiser and gave chase briefly, but terminated the pursuit because of high speed. Sheriff’s investigators believe Johnson and Parfait are responsible for defrauding gas stations on Alpine Avenue in the Grand Rapids area, Cedar Springs, Grandville, Caledonia and Morley. The first fraud was in mid-November and police think substance abuse may be motivating factor in the crimes. The vehicle in the video, a Chevy Impala, later was found abandoned in a field near Hanna Lake Avenue and the Allegan County line. Police think the pair then stole a gold 2002 Chevy Silverado, plate number is DYZ5686, from the nearby area. Anyone with information on their whereabouts is asked to call Silent Observer at 616-774-2345.
