SAFE INSIDE THE ROCK

by Creflo Dollar

When a storm is brewing, hiding inside of something is sometimes the best protection. In areas prone to violent storms, people build shelters to stay safe inside. The same is true when the storms of life hit. When we feel the need to hide inside something bigger than ourselves, God is the Rock in whom we can take refuge.
Most of us can remember times when we felt inadequate to deal with whatever trouble rose up. Sometimes we were blindsided by something we never saw coming, and may have realized we weren’t strong enough to deal with it on our own. In situations like these, we find comfort and strength when we rely on God to see us safely through to the other side. “The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower... He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them which hated me: for they were too strong for me” (Psalm 18:2, 17). David trusted God to deliver him from trouble when King Saul was trying to kill him, and the same level of protection is available for us today.
There are many options we can turn to for our protection, but safety provided by any human source has its natural limitations. God has no limits, and He can easily do what others can’t. “But the rock of our enemies is not like our Rock, as even they recognize” (Deuteronomy 32:31, NLT). Common sense tells us that even the strongest individuals can fall if they rely on their own strength. There’s nothing wrong with preparing ourselves as best we can for any circumstance, but when all else fails, God is always willing and able to shelter us from trouble that threatens to overwhelm us.
Some people depend on their own intellectual knowledge or cleverness to get out of a bad situation, only to find themselves sinking in deeper and deeper. The trouble with this kind of self-effort is that we’re not solidly anchored when we don’t trust God for our protection, and the unexpected can knock us off our feet. “Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved” (Psalm 62:1, 2). He stabilizes us and comes to our rescue.
In ancient times, soldiers hid inside rock fortresses to withstand enemy attacks. Rock is known for its solid, impenetrable qualities, and hiding behind a large boulder tends to make us feel safer when danger approaches. God is like that boulder, only infinitely stronger. It’s no accident that the Bible refers to Him as a rock (2 Samuel 22:32; Psalm 18:31).
We all have a choice as to who, or what, we turn to when we need help. The saying, “When it rains, it pours” reminds us that trouble can hit us in rapid-fire succession without warning. We risk being swept away by adversity if we don’t have a solid plan of action, but going to God for protection and deliverance is our wisest choice. “And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock” (Matthew 7:25). We can depend on Him to be our bedrock and foundation, and He’ll never let us down.
