Why are we obese?

  • Physical activities - we are all too stationary and need more physical activities
  • Genetics - a strong component, but doesn’t completely predetermined because of our genes
  • Junk foods, we eat too many processed foods
  • Food Addiction - These highly engineered junk foods cause powerful stimulation of the reward centers in our brains
  • Aggressive marketing companies aggressively marketing unhealthy products as healthy foods
  • Insulin regulates energy storage among other things. Insulin tells fat cells to store fat and hold onto fat that you already have. Best way to lower insulin is to cut back on carbs.
  • Certain Medications - weight gain as a side effect
  • Leptin -  hormone crucial in obesity. Leptin produced by fat cells and sends signals to hyprothalamus we are full and to stop eating. We have lots of fat and leptin, but problem is that leptin isn’t working like it should, for some reason the brain becomes resistant to leptin.
  • Sugar -  is the single worst part of the modern diet. Excess sugar changes hormones and biochemistry of body contributing to weight gain. Excess fructose causes insulin resistance and elevates levels causing leptin resistance.
How prevalent is obesity in the US?
According to data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 2013–2014
More than 1 in 3 adults were considered to be overweight.
More than 2 in 3 adults were considered to be overweight or have obesity.
More than 1 in 3 adults were considered to have obesity.
About 1 in 13 adults were considered to have extreme obesity.
About 1 in 6 children and adolescents ages 2 to 19 were considered to have obesity.
And as you can see, obesity is increasing every year.
What is the percentage of obesity in America 2016?
"The age-adjusted prevalence of obesity in 2013-2014 was 35 percent among men and 40.4 percent among women," they wrote in their report, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. More than 5 percent of men and nearly 10 percent of women were morbidly obese, with a BMI of 40 or more. Jun 7, 2016
