Bowie State Bulldogs Women’s Basketball Earns Huge 71-62 Division Win at Chowan Hawks

 Nationally Ranked Virginia Union Pushes Past Bowie State 67-52
MURFREESBORO, N.C. – Bowie State women’s basketball seems to have Chowan’s number, sweeping the Hawks for the second straight season and cruised to a huge 71-62 road win on Saturday afternoon in the Helms Center. With the women, Bowie State improves to 15-8 overall, 8-6 in CIAA play and 3-5 within the Northern Division.

Seniors Kiara Colston (Burtonsville, Md.) and Kyah Proctor (Capital Heights, Md.) paced the Bulldogs with 19 and 16 points respectively. Sophomores Dynaisha Christian (Pocomoke, Md.) and Kyaja Williams (Baltimore, Md.) tallied eight points each while redshirt junior Pere Alexander (Baltimore, Md.) came off the Bowie State bench to contribute seven points. Williams was Bowie State’s leading rebounder with 10.

Graduate student Sade Chatman (Minneapolis, Minn.) chipped in six points to go along with four rebounds. Sophomore Amel Duggins (District Heights, Md.) and senior Lisa Jing (Laurel, Md.) rounded out Bowie State’s scorers with four and three points respectively.

The Bulldogs led the Hawks 18-17 after one quarter, but the Chowan Hawks opened the second quarter with a 5-0 run to take a 22-18 advantage. However, Bowie State used an 14-1 run to take a 32-23 midway through the second quarter, capped off by an Alexander jumper.

Bowie State took a 34-31 lead into halftime with Proctor leading the team with 10 points.

Bowie State led 53-48 after three quarters and broke the game open early in the fourth quarter, opening a 60-48 cushion by the 8:25 mark of the final stanza and held its largest lead of the afternoon at 64-51 less than three minutes later.

Chowan trailed by double-digits most of the fourth quarter until a pair of free throws by Jada Lee trimmed the margin to nine, accounting for the final margin of 71-62.

Dhyamond Crenshaw led for Hawks players in double figures with 17 points while Chantel Roberts and Lee recorded 16 and 13 points respectively. Roberts hauled down a team-high 10 rebounds in the loss. Chowan (18-6, 10-4 CIAA, 5-3 North) also got double figure scoring from Mariah Coker, adding 10 points.

Bowie State finished the contest with a 39.3 field goal shooting percentage (24-of-61) compared to 35.6 percent (21-of-59) for Chowan. The Bulldogs knocked down 9-of-17 triples on the afternoon (52.9 percent) and edged the Hawks on the glass 39-36.





The Bowie State women’s basketball team return home on Wednesday (February 21st) to host the Virginia State Trojans at 5:30 p.m.
