Bulldogs Women’s Basketball Opens Season with 53-35 Victory over Kutztown

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Bowie State University women’s basketball team opened the 2017-2018 season with 53-35 victory against Kutztown University on Friday afternoon in the opening game of the Wolf’s Bus Lines Classic hosted by Shippensburg University.


Senior Kyah Proctor (Capital Heights, Md.) and 16 paced Bowie State on 7-of-10 shooting from the field. Graduate student Sade Chatman (Minneapolis, Minn.) and redshirt junior Pere Alexander (Baltimore, Md.) shipped in eight points apiece in the win. Alexander was the games leading rebounder with eight. Senior Kiara Colston dished out a game-high four assists.

Bowie State held a 10-2 advantage after one quarter of action and pushed their lead to 16-4 at the five-minute media timeout of the second quarter.

Both teams shot poorly in the opening half, with Kutztown making just 4-of-20 from the floor (20 percent) and Bowie State connecting on just 9-of-31 shots from the floor (29 percent) to take a 18-10 lead into halftime. The Bowie State Bulldogs converted 15 Kutztown Golden Bears’ first half turnovers into 12 points.
 
Bowie State extended the lead to 33-14 by the 4:52 mark of the third quarter and opened a commanding 43-19 advantage after three quarters. The Bulldogs outscored the Golden Bears 25-9 in the third quarter.
 
Midway through the fourth quarter third-year head coach Shadae Swan went deep into her bench, giving some reserves playing time as Bowie State was in total control of the game.

Kutztown was led by Alexis Smith with a team-high seven points to go along with three rebounds and a pair of assists.

The Golden Bears shot a chilly 21.3 percent from the field (10-of-47) which included 3-of-17 behind the arc. Kutztown did shoot well at the charity stripe, hitting 12-of-16 (75.0 percent).



Bowie State ended the contest shooting 39.3 percent from the field (22-of-56), knocked down 7-of-10 free throws (70 percent) and out-rebounded their opponent 38-35.


Bowie State return to action on Saturday evening against host Shippensburg. Game time between the Bulldogs and Raiders is 6 p.m. in Heiges Field House.
