Bowling Makes Incredible Comeback to Capture CIAA Crown

CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Bowie State University women's bowling under the leadership of head coach Kenneth Scott, made it a 3-Peat as CIAA Champions on Sunday afternoon, defeating Fayetteville State University 4-2 coming out of the losers bracket. The win also marks Bowie State's 7th overall CIAA Crown (2005, 2006, 2010, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017). The Bulldogs won the double-elimination tournament by scores of 165-138, 166-173, 178-175, 208-134, 156-157 and 168-107.

The final day of CIAA bowling competition began with Round two of the double-elimination, championship bracket. No. 1 Fayetteville State defeated No. 4 Virginia Union 4-1 to continue their journey in the winner bracket. The No. 3 Bulldogs of Bowie State slid by the No. 2 Virginia State University Trojans, but were knocked in to the bottom bracket after meeting the Lady Broncos. Fayetteville State won 4-1 in, what turned out to be, the two teams’ first battle of the day.

In the lower bracket, Saint Augustine's and Johnson C. Smith advanced with victories over Chowan and Shaw, respectively. The Hawks and Lady Bears were eliminated from the championship after the second round of competition. No. 8 Saint Augustine’s ended their run after facing Virginia Union, who won 4-0. Finishing Round 3, Virginia State went on a 4-0 sweep to send Johnson C. Smith packing.

The lanes became heated when Bowie State and Virginia State met yet again, this time in the lower bracket. This time the Bulldogs knew not to take the Trojans lightly, but the match still continued to six games. After BSU won 166-134 in the first game, VSU retaliated with a big 215-133 victory in the second. The Bulldogs proceeded to win games 3, 4, & 6 to advance to the CIAA Bowling Championship finals, meeting the Lady Broncos once again.

The Fayetteville State Broncos sat idle for two rounds and their fatigue showed. The Bulldogs won the first three games (198-173, 203-192 and 171-168) before splitting the fourth with a tie (135-135). The Broncos gained their bearings and marked their first victory of the set, 159-135.  However, BSU finished the job with a secure 170-157 victory.

Senior Ashley Wade (Richmond, Va.) and redshirt junior Sierra Davis (Dayton, Ohio) were named Co-MVP's of the Tournament. Sophomore Shannon Weaver (Fort Washington, Md.) was selected to the All-Tournament Team.
