Bulldogs Men’s Basketball Ends Regular Season with 68-65 Victory at Elizabeth City State/Trio of Bulldogs Guide Bowie State Bulldogs to Easy 72-44 Win at Elizabeth City State

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The regular season portion of the Bowie State University men’s basketball schedule is done following a 68-65 victory at Elizabeth City State University in the R.L. Vaughan Center on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the BSU Bulldogs up their season record to 12-14 overall, 9-7 in CIAA play and 6-5 within the division.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs were juniors Dayshawn Wells (Baltimore, Md.) and Ahmaad Wilson (Baltimore, Md.) with 17 and 15 points respectively. Senior Michael Briscoe (Waldorf, Md.) recorded 12 points and added four rebounds and three assists.

Seniors Brian Kelley (Lanham, Md.) and Enuoma Ebinum (Greenbelt, Md.) were responsible for nine and six points respectively. Ebinum was Bowie State leader on the glass with six rebounds and led both teams in blocked shots with two. Senior Eric Pitts (Baltimore, Md.) chipped in three points and redshirt freshman tacked on two points in the win.

Kyree Marshall was Elizabeth City State’s leading scorer with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Jordan Jones notched a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds in the loss while Elon Edwards and Matthew McIntosh scored 10 points apiece for the Vikings.

Elizabeth City State (2-22, 2-14 CIAA, 1-9 North) led the entire first half and by as much as 16 (28-12) at the 3:37 mark.

Bowie State went on a 14-4 run over the final 3:24 and narrowed the Elizabeth City State lead to 32-26 by halftime.

The Vikings pushed its lead back up to double digits (48-38) at the 11:56 mark of the second half but the Bulldogs put together another run (18-7) to gain the advantage at 56-55 following a 3-pointer by Wilson with 6:16 left in the game.

The final 5:22 featured four ties but Bowie State never relinquished the lead the rest of the afternoon.

In terms of team stats, Bowie State out-rebounded Elizabeth City State 28-24, made 23-of-54 field goals (42.6 percent) and knocked down 14-of-16 (87.5 percent) at the charity stripe. On the lower half of the stat sheet, Elizabeth City State connected on 45.3 percent of their shots (24-of-53) and 70.6 percent of its free throws (12-of-17).

Bowie State’s Bulldogs will enter the CIAA Tournament seeded #4 in the North and will tangle with the winner of the Johnson C. Smith/Elizabeth City State game on Wednesday (2/22) in the 8:50 p.m. nightcap in the Bojangles Arena.


Trio of Bulldogs Guide Bowie State Bulldogs to Easy 72-44 Win at Elizabeth City State


ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Bowie State women’s basketball concluded the regular season portion of its 2016-2017 season with a 72-44 win over Elizabeth City State on Saturday afternoon. The win gives Bulldogs a series sweep over the Vikings and sets the Bowie State record at 19-7 overall, 11-5 in the CIAA and 6-4 North heading on to next week’s conference championships in Charlotte.

The Bulldogs were led by junior Kyah Proctor (Capitol Heights, Md.) with a game-high 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor, which included 3-of-7 behind the 3-point line. Senior Denver Clyde (Glen Burnie, Md.) contributed 14 points and junior Kiara Colston (Burtonsville, Md.) finished with 13 points, a team-high six rebounds and a game-high five assists.

Jalyn Brown led Elizabeth City State (5-17, 3-13 CIAA, 1-9 North) with 14 points and was the Lady Vikings’ only double figure scorer. Chalise Greenwood tallied seven points to go along with four rebounds while D’asya Wilson was the games’ leading rebounder with eight.

Bowie State led from the opening tip until the final buzzer, knocking down a season-high 52.6 percent of their shots (20-of-38) and held advantages in rebounds (32-23), points in the paint (18-14), points off turnovers (22-10), second chance points (16-12) and bench points (21-11). The Bulldogs made 9-of-17 shots beyond the arc (52.9 percent) and connected on 23-of-33 free throws (69.7 percent).

The Bulldogs took a 31-18 lead into halftime and the Bowie State defense held the Lady Vikings to only five points, all free throws in the second quarter. Elizabeth City State was 0-of-12 from the field in the second quarter with six of those attempts coming behind the 3-point line.

Bowie State’s lead grew to 20 points (43-23) by the 4:07 mark of the third quarter after a pair of free throws by junior Lisa Jing (Laurel, Md.). The Bulldogs defense held the Lady Vikings to single digit scoring in the third quarter, allowing just nine points compared to 20 for Bowie State.

The Bowie State lead ballooned to a game-high 30 points (64-34) with three minutes to go in the contest as the Bulldogs cruised to its largest margin of victory of the season.

Bowie State’s women enter the CIAA Tournament as the #4 seed in the North and will face Fayetteville State on Tuesday (2/21) at 10 a.m. in the Bojangles Coliseum.
