Lady Bulldogs Basketball Opens Season with 59-45 Victory over Indiana (Pa.)

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Bowie State University women’s basketball team opened the 2016-2017 with a 59-45 victory against Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Friday afternoon in the opening game of the Wolf’s Bus Lines Classic hosted by Shippensburg University.

Senior Denver Clyde (Glen Burnie, Md.) and junior Kyah Proctor (Capital Heights, Md.) paced Bowie State with 17 and 16 points respectively while freshman Kyaja Williams (Baltimore, Md.) grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds in the win.

Bowie State scored 21 points off 16 IUP turnovers and outscored the Hawks 28-20 in the paint. The Lady Bulldogs shot 37.1 percent from the field (23-of-62), which included 6-of-15 beyond the arc and knocked down 7-of-12 free throws (58.3 percent).

Both teams shot poorly in the opening half, with IUP making just 5-of-23 from the floor and Bowie State connecting on just 11 shots from the floor to take a 28-16 lead into halftime.

The Crimson Hawks' offense picked it up to start the third quarter, as a three-pointer by Carolyn Appleby jump-started an 11-3 run for IUP to narrow its deficit to six at 33-27. Appleby made another triple, two possessions later and Lauren Wolosik added a layup-and-one during the run.

Bowie State responded by scoring 10 straight points, and used a 13-2 run to take a 14-point lead into the fourth quarter.

IUP trimmed the Bowie lead to nine with just over six minutes remaining on another three-pointer by Appleby, but that's the closest the Crimson Hawks would get.

IUP was led by Meghan Smith with a team-high 16 points and nine rebounds. Appleby and Wolosik chipped in nine and seven points respectively in the loss.

The Crimson Hawks shot a chilly 26.3 percent from the field (15-of-27) which included 5-of-26 behind the arc. Indiana (Pa.) did shoot well at the charity stripe, hitting 10-of-12 (83.3 percent).

The Lady Bulldogs return to action on Saturday evening against host Shippensburg. Game time between the Lady Bulldogs and Raiders is 6 p.m. in Heiges Field House.
