Prepare With Training And Football Drills For Big Time Plays

by Robbie Fredric

Football is the type of sport that requires its players to both be in shape and knowledgeable of different aspects of the game. Whether a player plays on the defensive or offensive side, even on special teams such as kickoff and punt returns, the player needs to be prepared for the numerous challenges that can occur throughout the course of a game. In order to best prepare for the sport's grueling aspects, a player needs to get familiar with both training and football drills.

Endurance Training

Football players should engage in a large amount of training that focuses specifically on increasing each player's stamina. Due to the nature of the sport of football with running, blocking, tackling and the like, stamina is highly important for a football player to endure the full contact sport's lengthy battles on the field. A player's stamina increases through endurance training that allows him to complete a game.

Endurance training may include exercises as simple as running. Many legendary athletes like former NFL Wide Receiver Jerry Rice challenged themselves to run lengthy miles as well as vigorous peaks in order to build up their own stamina. Novice athletes should start with short, low endurance runs, even alternating between sprints and jogs, on a track. Athletes with some prior endurance training can try walking or hiking trails with various terrains like hills and valleys. As the player's endurance level increases, more challenging courses could be incorporated into the endurance training routine.

Strength Training

Many football programs provide players with access to a gym or weight room for strength training. Strength training provides players with the proper amount of resistance training to build and strengthen muscles in order to prevent injuries and to allow players to increase their overall strength. Strength training is highly important due to football's full contact nature. Players should also be aware of safety precautions when engaging in strength training like working out with a partner, especially for free weight workout routines such as bench press and squats that require a spotter.

Strength training can be done through a variety of methods. One popular strength training method is to alternate days between upper body and lower body workout routines in order to give muscles the proper rest that they need to fully recover from the previous day's workout. Players should work with a team's trainer or strength coach to develop a strength training regimen that works best for them.

Football Drill and Practice

The playbook is what gets players mentally prepared for the actual implementation of plays on the field. However, literal drills and practice make those plays come to life. Players will undergo a series of drills during practice sessions to familiarize themselves with the plays being called and how each player's role works within the play. This is vitally important time during practice since it provides coaches with insights for making adjustments and substitutions for game day decisions.

During practice, football players will run passing routes, blocking plays and defensive sets as well as special teams formations. In many cases, these will be done in both walkthroughs and real time in order for players to see how the plays take shape with and without a defensive set.

Football players can get better prepared with proper training and practice via football drills.
