Bowie State U Tennis and Track and Field Results

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Bowie State University women’s tennis team closed out the regular season portion of its schedule on Saturday (4/23) sweeping Elizabeth City State University by scores of 7-0, 7-0.

In match one, Bowie State claimed 8-0 wins at No. 1-4 singles and defeated Elizabeth City State 8-2 at No. 5 singles. The Lady Bulldogs blanked the Lady Vikings 8-0 at No. 1 doubles and dominated at No. 2 doubles, winning by a score of 8-1.

The Lady Bulldogs breezed in match two as well, scoring an 8-0 shutout at No. 1 and 2 doubles and topped ECSU’s Lady Vikings 8-0 at No. 1, 2 and 5 singles. Bowie State rolled 8-1 and 8-1 at No. 3 and 4 singles to complete the sweep and improved to 9-7 overall, 7-6 in the CIAA and 6-4 in the Northern Division.

Bowie State will head to Raleigh, N.C. for the CIAA Spring Tennis Championships (April 28-30).

Men’s Track and Field Place Fifth at CIAA Outdoor Championships
Women Place Eighth Overall


CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Bowie State University men finished fifth at the 2016 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Saturdaywhile the women finished eighth overall. The Bulldogs claimed fifth place with 59.50 points and the women scored 15 points.  

Top-ranked Saint Augustine’s University won its 19th conference men’s crown with 203 points followed by Virginia Union University in second (139.83 points) and Virginia State University finished third (107.33 points).

Robert Thomas placed fifth in the 400 meter dash (50.04) and had another fifth place finish in the 800 meter run (2:01.46).

David Guwani recorded a top five performance in the 5000 meter run, finishing fifth with a time of 16:52.20 and placed eighth in the 1500 meter run, clocking in at 4:31.49.

Michael Washington and Kadeem Bailey rounded out Bowie State’s top five finishers, placing third and fifth respectively overall in the men’s shot put (13.71m) and javelin (42.04m) respectively.

On the women’s side, Johnson C. Smith University claimed the conference title with 165 points followed by St. Augustine’s University in second (156 points) and Winston-Salem State University rounded out the top three with 138.50 points.

Alicia Grant was the top finisher for the Lady Bulldogs placing fourth in the javelin (33.94) while teammate Alexis Conyers rounded out Bowie State’s top five finishers with a fifth place finish in the shot put (11.97m).

The effort completes the conference portion of the season for the men and women’s track and field teams. Both teams return to competition (April 28-30) at the prestigious 119th running of The Penn Relays.
