Second Half Makes the Difference in Bowie State’s 70-55 Home Finale Win against Chowan

BOWIE, Md. - Four Bowie State University players scored in double figures to lead the Bulldogs to a 70-55 home finale victory over the Chowan Hawks to improve to 19-7 overall, 11-3 in CIAA play and 6-2 in the North.

Senior Cameron Knox (Baltimore, Md.) netted a game-high 20 points on 6-of-15 shooting from the field. Senior Zafir Williams (Philadelphia, Pa.) and freshman Dayshawn Wells (Baltimore, Md.) added 11 points apiece and freshman Ahmaad Wilson (Baltimore, Md.) contributed 10 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists and a game-high three steals.

Junior Justin Beck (Ellicott City, Md.) recorded eight points and eight rebounds in the win while junior Miles Jackson (Silver Spring, Md.) chipped in seven points. Junior Julian Livingston (Bowie, Md.) tallied three points to round out Bowie State’s scorers.

Mark Anthony Buright (Detoit, Mich.) opened the contest with a three-pointer.  The Hawks led 7-0 by the 17:19 mark before the Bulldogs battled back to knot the score with 15:47 remaining before halftime.  Trailing 12-11 with 11:15 on the clock following a Wilson three-pointer, Jalen Marshall’s (Hampton, Va.) layup returned the advantage to the Hawks.  Wells responded with a three-pointer for Bowie State to give the Bulldogs a 15-13 edge.

Bowie State led by as many as 11 points (27-16) with 4:13 left in the first half.  Down but not out, Chowan (13-11, 7-7 CIAA, 4-4 North) chipped away at the deficit and trailed by a mere point (30-29) after Smith's three-pointer capped a 13-3 run at the end of the first half.

Two made free throws by Kyree Bethel (Fayetteville, N.C.) followed by a Josh Mellette (Sanford, N.C.) jumper at the start of the second half pushed Chowan in front 33-30.  With the score tied 36-36 at the 15:27 mark, a dunk by Trevis Buckhanon (Baltimore, Md.) shifted the momentum back in favor of the Hawks.  Wilson's three-pointer for Bowie State at the 12:10 mark sparked an 8-0 run and left the Hawks trailing 46-38 with just under ten minutes left in the game.

Wilson's made free throw for Bowie State with 7:11 on the clock pushed the Bulldogs ahead by ten points (53-43).  Chowan trailed by double digit points on all but two occasions in the remainder of the contest.

Bowie State outscored Chowan 40-26 in the second half on 11-of-21 shooting from the field and 15-of-19 at the charity stripe.

Kotrtez Smith (Waldorf, Md.) and Mellette led the Hawks in scoring with 13 and 10 points respectively. Bethel, the teams’ leader in scoring average was held to just nine points.

“We met our goals … outrebounded them by 10 which was huge, held their leading scorer to single digits and did a great job defensively as a team”, said head coach Darrell Brooks. “As long as we’re defending a rebounding, we’re a tough team to beat.”

The Bulldogs travel south for their next contest which happens to be at division leading Virginia State on Wednesday (2/18) at 7:30 pm.
