Late Bowie State Charge Not Enough in 73-69 Loss to Saint Augustine’s Lady Falcons

BOWIE, Md. – The Bowie State Lady Bulldogs went on a 23-10 late second half run, but it was not enough as Saint Augustine’s held of the charge to capture a 73-69 win. Junior Denver Clyde (Glen Burnie, Md.) finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs and junior teammate Donia Naylor (Washington, D.C.) totaled season highs of 13 points and 13 rebounds to pace Bowie State.

Junior Ashley Castle (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 10 points, three assists and two steals and the Lady Bulldogs out-scored Saint Augustine’s 38-22 in the paint. The loss, Bowie State’s third in row, evens the Lady Bulldogs record at 6-6 (1-3 CIAA).

Lakiya Rouse (Greensboro, N.C.) scored a team-high 15 points, including four key free throws in the final two minutes to lead Saint Augustine’s in scoring. Rouse also pulled down eight rebounds which was second best on the team behind Terri Jacobs’ (McDonough, Ga.) 12 rebounds.

With the victory, the Lady Falcons (8-4 overall / 3-0 CIAA) extended their win streak to six games.

Lady Falcons’ Jeanne-Marie Wilson (Temple Hills, Md.) added 12 points in a return to her home state Porscha Walton (Chesterfield, Va.) scored 10 points for the visitors. Regime McCombs (Greenville, S.C.) added eight points and Ebony Spencer (Chesapeake, Va.) chipped in seven points for the Lady Falcons, who outscored the Bulldogs 40-30 in bench points.

Both Rouse and Jacobs combined to make 6-of-6 free throws in last 1:54 to stave off the Lady Bulldogs, who tied the game at 67-67 after trailing by 15 points early in the second half. Rouse was 4-for-4 and Jacobs was 2-for-2 the Lady Falcons.

After hitting two free throws, Jacobs came up with a huge block to preserve a four-point lead. Rouse put the game away with two huge free throws for a six-point lead with 39 seconds left. The contest was physical and heated with a player from each team getting a technical foul and a Bowie State player drawing an intentional foul. Bowie State third-year head coach Renard Smith was ejected after being whistled for two technical fouls. The aggressive play resulted in the Lady Falcons shooting 35-of-51 free throws.

The Lady Falcons maintained a sizable working margin in the second half after leading 41-28 at halftime. Walton drained two free throws for a 43-28 lead and the margin stayed in double digits until late in the second stanza.

The lead was 13 points after a Wilson free throw with 9:28 left, but the Lady Bulldogs used a 19-6 spurt to tie the game.
The Lady Bulldogs led 4-0 early, but the Lady Falcons asserted themselves quickly. Relying on pressure defense, Saint Augustine’s surged ahead 12-5 and never trailed again.

The Lady Bulldogs will look to snap their three game slide on Saturday (1/11), as Bowie State hosts Shaw University at 2 pm in the A.C. Jordan Arena.
