JOHNSON C. SMITH WOMEN STEAL A 63-61 VICTORY OVER BOWIE STATE

BOWIE, Md. - The Bowie State University women’s basketball team fell just short in a, 63-61, loss to visiting Johnson C. Smith Saturday evening at the A.C. Jordan Arena.

With the defeat, the Lady Bulldogs fell to 4-6 overall and 1-1 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association while the Lady Golden Bulls improved to 5-7 and 3-1 in the CIAA.

Junior Brooke Miles (Upper Marlboro, Md.) led the way for Bowie State with 19 points, including going 5-for-7 from behind the three-point arc. Sophomore Jasmine McIntosh (Bowie, Md.) recorded her third BSU career double-double scoring 15 points and tied her season-high in rebounds with 12. McIntosh’s 12 rebounds also tied for game-high honors.

“It really wasn’t a good night for us but we’ll hopefully learn from this setback”, said Bowie State head coach Renard Smith.

The Lady Bulldogs controlled most of the game, leading by nine at the half. But the Lady Golden Bulls held the Lady Bulldogs to just six points over the next 5:41 while closing the deficit to, 46-41.

The Lady Bulldogs held the lead, 61-59, with 35 seconds remaining but Lady Golden Bulls’ LaKendra Wilkerson (Greensboro, N.C.) closed the game strong and tied the game, 61-61, with two free throws following a defensive rebound that she grabbed.

Wilkerson was her team’s workhorse as she went 10-for-12 from the free throw line and scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Prior to Wilkerson’s game-tying free throws, the Lady Bulldogs took their last lead of the game when BSU’s Miles hit a three-pointer with 53 seconds remaining to give her team a two-point advantage.

Johnson C. Smith sealed the game when Wilkerson hit two free throws with one second remaining to put her team up, 63-61, following Bowie State junior Moriah Goodman’s fifth foul and disqualification.

JCSU’s Brittany Dorsett (Winston-Salem, N.C.) scored a game-high 20 points in 40 minutes. Deanna Downer (Elberton, Ga.) chipped in 13 points, seven from the free throw line where the Lady Golden Bulls shot 81.8 percent (18-22) in the second half.

Lady Bulldogs’ sophomore Bria Robinson (Richmond, Va.) added 13 points in 22 minutes of action.

The Lady Bulldogs wrap up a three game home stand Monday (January 7th) evening against Winston-Salem State. The Lady Rams and Lady Bulldogs are set for a 5:30 pm start.
