QUEENS (NY) COLLEGE SQUEEZES BY LADY BULLDOGS 72-71 IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Sophomores Bria Robinson and Channell Mackey combined for 30 points but it was Queens (N.Y.) College's Bria Jackson's 49 points that keyed the Knights to a 72-71 come from behind double overtime victory over the Lady Bulldogs.
Queens, outmanned from the start, with only eight players in uniform, fell behind early as the Lady Bulldogs jumped to 13-2 lead over the first eight minutes of game action.  Bowie State pushed the lead to as many as 16 points when senior Cortney Baynard hit a pair of free throws at the 3:32 mark of the first half to make the score 33-17.  Bowie State led at the half, 35-25.

The Knights began to chip away at the deficit early in the second half as Jackson scored Queens’ first four points of the period to narrow the BSU lead to 36-29.  Queens got as close at two points, at 36-34, when Marie Byrnes notched the first of two foul shots at 15:05.  From there, Bowie State (3-5) built its lead back up to eight points when Robinson netted one of her team-best 17 points, to make the score 51-43, with just over five minutes remaining in regulation.

Queens (4-5) used a 12-4 run over the final five minutes to force overtime and Jackson was personally responsible for all 12 of those points, with none bigger than three-point field goal as time expired to tie the score at 55-all to force overtime.

The first overtime opened with Robinson giving Bowie State the lead with a pair of foul shots.  Kristen Korzevinski promptly evened the score with a layup for Queens.  About two-and-a-half minutes later, the Knights took their first lead since 2-0 on a pair of free throws by Maria Byrnes at the 2:42 mark of the first overtime period to make the score 59-57, Queens.

The closing seconds of the first overtime saw the Lady Bulldogs take a one-point lead as senior Jasmine Jacobs sliced through the paint for a layup.  The Knights responded by getting the ball to Lisanne Comeau who made one of two free throws with four seconds remaining to force a second overtime.

Mackey (13 points) gave Bowie State a little breathing room at 67-64 with 3:24 left.  A layup by Joya McFarland on the very next Queens possession pulled the Knights back within a point at 67-66.  BSU’s Mackey responded with a pair of free throws and a 69-66 lead. However,  Jackson closed out the game with a pair of buckets and two foul shots to ensure the one point win for the Knights.

In terms of team stats, Bowie State shot 24-of-59 from the floor (41 percent) compared to 22-of-75 from the floor (29 percent) for Queens. The Lady Bulldogs shot a blistering 63.2 percent in the first half (12-of-19) and were led in the first 20 minutes by junior Brooke Miles with nine points (12 overall). The Knights out-rebounded the Lady Bulldogs 54-41 and forced BSU into 21 turnovers.
