Bowie State 62 - Fayetteville State 54 (MEN'S CIAA CHAMPIONSHIP)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Bowie State won the battle of attrition against Fayetteville State and captured a CIAA Men’s Basketball Championship because of it.

Tournament MVP Ahmaad Wilson scored 20 points as the Bulldogs outlasted the Broncos 62-54 at the Spectrum Center on Saturday, Feb. 25. The conference crown was the first since 2013 and the third overall for the Bulldogs, who gained the automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Tournament that goes with winning the championship.
The Bulldogs (16-14 overall), seeded fourth in the Northern Division, won the title by exhibiting the toughness that has marked the program since Darrell Brooks became head coach. They won four games in four days in the tournament including victories over Northern Division top seed Virginia Union and Southern Division No. 2 seed Livingstone.

“It was one of those games where you had to be gritty,” said Brooks, who captured his second CIAA championship at Bowie State. “It wasn’t pretty. Both teams struggled offensively due to good defense. We just stuck with it.”

Their opponent on Saturday was equally tough as the Broncos (13-16), seeded fourth in the Southern Division, also played their fourth game in four days. The low-scoring contest featured seven lead changes and three ties but the Bulldogs made key plays in the second half that turned the game in their favor.

The biggest plays occurred early in the second half with the Bulldogs nursing a 27-26 lead. After two free throws by Enuoma Ebinum, the Bulldogs converted two steals off inbound passes into an Omari George layup and a Wilson three-pointer to extend the margin to 34-26. It was the cushion they needed to stay ahead even though the Broncos pulled within three points twice.

But after the score was 52-49 on Josh Bryant’s layup, standout point guard Josh Dawson, who averaged 17.5 points the previous three games, was whistled for his fifth foul at the 2:12 mark. With the Broncos floorleader and catalyst watching from the bench, the Bulldogs finished with a 10-5 run to put the game away.

“Thank God!,” said Wilson afterward when asked about Dawson fouling out the game.

Dawson, guarded tightly by a stout Bulldogs defense, scored nine points but added four assists and five rebounds.
“We wanted to keep a fresh body on him,” Wilson said. “He scored 28 the previous night. We didn’t want him to go off.”

Both George and Ebinum added 11 points each for the Bulldogs with Ebinum collecting three blocks including a couple down the stretch to ward off a late Broncos run. Michael Briscoe contributed nine points, eight rebounds and two steals for the Bulldogs, who shot 39.3 percent but forced 18 points off 16 Bronco turnovers. George and Dayshawn Wells combined for six of the Bulldogs’ 10 steals.

Bryant produced 14 points and nine rebounds for the Broncos, who shot 37.7 percent. Michael Tyson added 10 points and eight rebounds while William Tibbs and Jyonte Raynor scored eight points apiece for the Broncos, who outrebounded the Bulldogs 40-33.

Playing four consecutive days seemed to catch up with both teams early on. Neither team provided much fireworks offensively as the Bulldogs shot 32.1 percent and the Broncos 24.1 percent. The point total was the second-lowest for the Broncos and the fourth-lowest for the Bulldogs this season.

The Bulldogs managed to generate some offense midway in the half. A three-point play by George capped a 10-4 run which gave the Bulldogs an 18-12 lead with 4:08 left. The Broncos came back with an 8-3 run capped by two Dawson free throws to trim the margin to 21-20 at halftime.

Wilson scored six points and George added five points and three steals while Briscoe snatched six rebounds for the Bulldogs, who forced nine Bronco turnovers for nine points. Bryant scored seven points and corralled six rebounds and Tibbs chipped in six points for the Broncos, who outrebounded the Bulldogs 24-18.

Though the Bulldogs claimed the championship, the Broncos felt a sense of accomplishment after defying the odds and reaching the title game. They knocked off Southern Division top seed Shaw and No. 2 Northern Division seed Virginia State, the defending champion, on the way to the finals.

Wilson was one of 10 players selected to the CIAA All-Tournament team. The others are Briscoe of Bowie State, Dawson, Tyson and Bryant of Fayetteville State, David Duncan of Livingstone, Quincy January of Saint Augustine’s, Elijah Moore and Richard Granberry of Virginia State and Robert Davis of Johnson C. Smith.

Bowie State Bulldogs Defeats Livingstone 71-69 and Advance to CIAA Championship

Charlotte, N.C. - The Bowie State University men's basketball team held off a late charge from Livingstone University to record their second upset victory of the CIAA Tournament in as many days, defeating second seed Livingstone College, 71-69 in the semi-finals Friday evening at the Spectrum Center

The fourth seeded Bulldogs advance to Saturday's championship game and will play the winner of tonight's second semi-final game between Virginia State University and Fayetteville State University.  Bowie State improves to 15-14.  Livingstone finishes the season at 11-17.

Michael Briscoe (Waldorf, Md.) and Ahmaad Wilson (Baltimore, Md.) combined to score 42 points for Bowie State.  Briscoe knocked down 24 points on 10-17 shooting and also had a game high six steals.  Wilson scored 18 points.

Roger Ray (Raleigh, N.C.) led Livingstone with 17 points.  David Duncan (Washington, D.C.) added 11 points and a game-high 19 rebounds.

Bowie State fell behind early courtesy of a 12-2 flourish by Livingstone, giving the Blue Bears a 20-8 lead.  Five straight points for the Bulldogs closed the gap to 20-13 before Livingstone pushed the lead back up to double figures at 25-15 at the 8:21 mark.   After a media timeout Bowie State began to chip away at the Livingstone lead, taking advantage of eight Blue Bear turnovers to produce a 22-7 outburst to close out the first half and take a 37-32 lead at the break.

Briscoe paced the Bulldogs in the first half with 12 points while Dayshawn Wells (Baltimore, Md.) added eight.  Samuel McClendon (Detroit, Mich.) had eight points for the Blue Bears.

Turnovers played a big role in the momentum shift in the first half as Bowie State took full advantage of 16 Livingstone turnovers, leading to 24 of their 37 points.  Bowie State also recorded a better shooting percentage, making 46.9% (15-32) of their shots in the first half while Livingstone shot 40.9% (9-22) from the field.

Duncan made two consecutive baskets to open the second half for Livingstone, cutting the Bowie State lead to one 37-36.  Bowie State continued to apply the defensive pressure, forcing six more turnovers leading to a 13-6 flourish and a 50-42 lead with 12:01 remaining.  Briscoe's three-point field goal at the 9:24 mark gave Bowie State its largest lead at 55-46.

Livingstone then began to chip away at the Bowie State lead, scoring six straight points, capped by Ray's traditional three-point play to make it a one possession game at 55-52.  The two teams exchanged baskets over the next several possessions until Ray stole the ball and took it the length of the court for a layup to pull Livingstone within one at 62-61.  After a defensive stop, LC's Desmond Stanback (Springdale, Md.)  got the ball down low and drove in for a layup, giving the Blue Bears a 63-62 lead with 4:30 left, capping off a 17-7 flourish.

Briscoe's three point field goal with 1:54 left put Bowie State back on top at 68-67.  Wilson then connected on three of four free throws in the final 12.1 seconds to secure the upset victory 71-69, Bowie State's second in two days.

Livingstone shot 52% from the field in the second half to finish the game shooting 46.8% (22-47) and also shot 91.7% (22-24) from the free throw line.  Their solid shooting percentages were offset by a season-high 30 turnovers leading to 34 points off turnovers by Bowie State and a 34-14 advantage in points off turnovers.   Bowie State shot 43.1% for the game (25-58) from the field and 62.5% (15-24) from the free throw line.  Livingstone also outrebounded Bowie State 42-24.

Bowie State Bulldogs Topple #1 Seed Virginia Union 84-78 in Tournament Quarterfinals

Charlotte, N.C. - It took Bowie State University a full half of basketball to get on track in Thursday's CIAA Men's Basketball Tournament quarterfinal game at the Spectrum Center but once the second half began, the Bulldogs turned in a dominant final 20 minutes to upset top seeded Virginia Union University, 84-78.

Bowie State improves to 14-14 overall and will face Livingstone College in the first semi-final game on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Spectrum Center.  Virginia Union falls to 22-7.

The Bulldogs shot 58.3 percent in the second half, connecting on 14-of-24 shots from the field.  Bowie State also shot 30 free throws, connecting on 20 in the final 20 minutes of action.   BSU finished the game shooting 48.1 percent (25-of-52) from the field and 28-of-42 (66.7 percent) from the free throw line.

It was Virginia Union that had the hot hand shooting in the first half, making eight of their first 13 shots, yet could not put much distance between themselves and the Bowie State squad as they led by only four points midway through the half, 19-15.  The Panthers cooled off somewhat as the half wore on but still opened their biggest lead of the half at nine points, 27-18 with eight minutes remaining.  Bowie State followed with an 8-1 flourish to close the gap to two at 28-26 with 4:23 remaining and later tied the game at 33-33 on Michael Briscoe's (Waldorf, Md.) driving layup with 1:02 left, ending the scoring for the period.

Junior Omari George (Baltimore, Md.) led Bowie State with 13 first half points.  The Bulldogs shot 39.3% (11-28) from the field for the period.  Marcus Hoosier (Petersburg, Va.) led Virginia Union with eight points in the first half while the team shot 43.3% (13-of-30) from the field in the period.  Bowie State was able to keep the game close by taking advantage of seven Virginia Union turnovers, leading to a 9-2 advantage in the points off turnovers category.  Virginia Union scored 22 of its 33 first half points in the paint.

Bowie State and Virginia Union exchanged baskets to open the second half before the Panthers scored five straight points to take a 43-38 lead.  The Bulldogs followed with a 14-4 flourish, taking their first lead of the game on a three-point field goal from junior Dayshawn Wells (Baltimore, Md.) and increasing the gap to five at 52-47.

Virginia Union followed with six straight points to retake the lead at 53-52 but a 10-2 run by Bowie State, shifted the momentum and gave the Bulldogs a seven point lead at 62-55 with 7:56 remaining. The Panthers closed within four points several times over the next five minutes before the Bulldogs put the game away on the free throw line hitting 13-of-17 over the final two minutes to secure the upset, 84-78.

Bowie State placed four players in double figures with George leading the way with a career-high 24 points.  Junior Ahmaad Wilson (Baltimore, Md.) scored 17 points while Briscoe added 16 and a game-high eight rebounds.  Wells rounded out the double figure scorers for the Bulldogs with 13 points.  Briscoe and senior Brian Kelley (Lanham, Md.) had six assists apiece.

CIAA Player of the Year Ray Anderson (Wilmington, Del.) led four Virginia Union players in double figures with 23 points.  Hoosier added 13 points and James Paige (Herndon, Va.) chipped in 12.  Kory Cooley (Washington, D.C.) rounded out VUU's double figure scorers with 11 points.  Tavon Mealy (Richmond, Va.) led the team with a game-high eight rebounds.

Virginia Union finished the game shooting 43.5% from the field, making 27 of 62 shots.  The Panthers shot 20-29 (69%) from the free throw line.

Bowie State Bulldogs Battle and Capture 78-75 Overtime Victory Over Johnson C. Smith

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Bowie State junior Ahmaad Wilson (Baltimore, Md.) scored a career-high 30 points to go along with four rebounds while teammates Omari George added 15 points and seven rebounds and Michael Briscoe also added 13 points and eight rebounds in thrilling 78-75 overtime win over Johnson C. Smith.

With the win, Bowie State improves to 13-15 overall, while Johnson C. Smith finishes its season at 11-17.

A quick start from both teams, as the game started 8-7, as JCSU’s Malik Ford opens the scoring.  He was answered by Bowie State’s, Briscoe, who made one of two free throws. Johnson C. Smith would surge ahead 14-11 on a made basket by Gabon Williams to take the early lead. Williams would add a 3-pointer with 11:55 remaining in the first half to put the Golden Bulls up 17-11.

The game would settle and the teams began a time where the game was very sloppy on both ends. Lot of fouls, missed shot and blown opportunities would be the center of attention for several minutes.

The game would go a few minutes scoreless, as neither team could find the basket, and back to back 3-pointers from Wilson would give Bowie State the lead at 22-21. Wilson would then come up with a steal and drain another 3-pointer to give BSU a 24-21 advantage.

The BSU Bulldogs would continue to pressure the JCSU Golden Bulls, and would take a 32-31 halftime lead into the locker room.

Bowie State was led at halftime by Wilson who single handedly kept the Bulldogs in the game by scoring 24 first half points, on eight of 11 shots, including 6-of-7 shooting from behind the three point arc.

The first half featured three ties and three lead changes, while the Golden Bulls dominated the points in the paint with a 14-4 edge.

Johnson C. Smith shot 42.9 percent from the floor in the first half, while holding Bowie State to just 34.4 percent.

The Bulldogs began the second half with a 6-1 run to open 38-32 lead before a Gabon Williams triple stopped the run.

The Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith would assume the lead with 14:22 to play following a Williams layup, setting the score at 40-39.

A three point play the old fashioned way by Bowie State redshirt freshman David Belle (Hyattsville, Md.) put the Bulldogs back on top, before the Golden Bulls quickly answered with back to back baskets to regain the lead.

A three pointer by Bowie State senior Brian Kelley (Lanham, Md.) would tie the game at 45-all.

BSU senior Enuoma Ebinum (Greenbelt, Md.) scored on an inside move to give the Bulldogs a 54-48 lead, and on a key possession midway through the half, the BSU Bulldogs would come up with a key offensive rebound to keep the possession and stop the Golden Bulls from getting any closer.

Briscoe dropped a dagger from behind the arc on an off-balance shot as the shot clock buzzer sounded to give BSU a 57-52 lead.

Robert Davis would pull JCSU close, with the tough running banker 58-54. Johnson C. Smith got a huge rebound and basket from Gabon Williams with 3:45 left to play, but missed the free throw to get any closer.

Robert Davis went to the line with 3:15 remaining, and made two to tie the game at 59-59.

BSU’s junior Dayshawn Wells (Baltimore, Md.) hit a big three at the 2:26 mark to give the Bulldogs the 62-59 lead, and then would drill another triple for a 65-61 advantage.

Johnson C. Smith’s Christian Kirchman dropped in two free throws to close the deficit to 65-63.

BSU’s George would come up with a big steal and then would make one of two free throws to give the Bulldogs a little breathing room at 66-63 with 41 seconds left in regulation.

JCSU’s Aaron Adair would delay Bowie State celebration, stoking a three pointer to knot the game at 66-all. The Golden Bulls had a chance to win in regulation but Christian Williams’ three at the buzzer went off the rim, sending the game to overtime.

Bowie State never trailed in the extra period and with score tied at 68-68, the Bulldogs duo of Wilson and Briscoe put the team on their backs to earn the victory.

Johnson C. Smith was led by Gabon Williams who finished with 21 points while Robert Davis added 20 points and seven rebounds. Christian Williams chipped in 16 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.

Bowie State will now advance to face Virginia Union at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday evening at Spectrum Center.

Big Second Half Lifts Johnson C. Smith to 71-59 Quarterfinal Win Over Bowie State

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (20-7) used a big second half effort to pull away for a 71-59 win over the Bowie State Bulldogs (20-8), Wednesday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the 2017 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament. After playing to a close 26-25 halftime lead, the Golden Bulls outscored the Lady Bulldogs 45-33 to pull away for the victory.

The game was a hard-fought affair with both teams giving great efforts. In the end, it was the hot shooting Johnson C. Smith team that came out with the win. As a team, the Golden Bulls shot 42.3 percent (22-of-52) in the win while Bowie State shot 33.3 percent (20-of-60) from the floor. Johnson C. Smith was led by freshman guard Maiya Green who scored a team-high 21 points while junior guard Asha Jordan added a double-double 14 points with 10 rebounds. Senior guard Anika Jones added 11 points as well.

Bowie State was led by junior guard Kiara Colston (Burtonsville, Md.) who scored 16 points in the game while junior guard Lisa Jing (Laurel, Md.) added 11 points with six rebounds. All-Rookie Team selection Kyaja Williams (Baltimore, Md.) recorded seven points and senior Denver Clyde (Glen Burnie, Md.) ended her career with seven points as well.

Bulldogs All-CIAA pick Kyah Proctor (Capital Height, Md.) chipped in six points in the loss while senior Ashley Jennings (Newark, N.J.) and junior Pere Alexander (Baltimore, Md.) contributed five points each. Junior Renee Kydd (Suitland, Md.) scored two points in the final moments of the game to round out Bowie State’s scorers.

In the early going, it was Bowie State who controlled the game as they took a 13-11 lead after the first quarter. Johnson C. Smith was able to take an early 11-7 lead after a jumper from senior guard Krista White with 3:06 left in the quarter, but Bowie State closed out the quarter with a six-point run, capped by a Colston lay-up with 55 seconds left that put the Lady Bulldogs on top 13-11 at the end of the quarter.

The second quarter belonged to Johnson C. Smith with the Golden Bulls using a mid-quarter surge to jump ahead. Bowie State’s Jing hit a three-pointer with 8:01 to push the Bulldogs lead to 16-11. It was then that Johnson C. Smith mounted a nine-point run that put the Golden Bulls on top, 20-16 after a lay-up from senior forward MaryAnna Moore with 5:06 left to play. The Golden Bulls would keep their lead until a free throw by JCSU’s Monique Hall put the Golden Bulls on top, 25-24 with 54 seconds left. An Asha Jordan lay-up with four seconds left sent Johnson C. Smith into halftime leading 26-25.

Once in control, Johnson C. Smith remained on top with a big third quarter effort. The Golden Bulls went up by as many as eight points, 36-28 after a 10-2 run that was capped by a Jones lay-up with 5:41 left to play. The Golden Bulls would maintain the eight-point cushion until the final minute of the quarter when Bowie State closed the quarter with four unanswered points and ended the quarter with Johnson C. Smith in front, 42-38 heading into the fourth quarter.

Johnson C. Smith would put the game away with a big fourth quarter that saw the team score 29 points. Bowie State would challenge early with a Proctor lay-up with 7:08 remaining in the contest with Bowie State trailing, 47-43. However, Johnson C. Smith would go on a 10-3 run that effectively put the game out of reach for Bowie State. At the end of the run, JCSU held a 61-49 lead after a pair of Green free throws with two minutes to go. From there, Bowie State continued to fight, but some clutch free throws from the Golden Bulls in the final minutes put the game away. A Colston lay-up with 1:11 left to play would cut the BSU deficit to 10 points, 64-54, but the Bulldogs would get no closer.
