Kyaja Williams Layup Lifts Bowie State Bulldogs to 54-52 Win Against Winston-Salem State

BOWIE, Md. – Bowie State University women’s basketball overcame a 19-point deficit and rallied to defeat Winston-Salem State University 54-52 on Saturday (12/31) afternoon. The win, Bowie State’s eighth in a row, improves the Bulldogs record to an impressive 11-2 overall and a perfect 3-0 in CIAA play.

The Bulldogs defense held the Rams to just four fourth quarter points while scoring a game-high 22 points in the decisive quarter. Junior Kyah Proctor (Capital Heights, Md.) came off the bench for the first time this season and led the Bulldogs in scoring with 17 points to go along with six rebounds. Senior Denver Clyde (Glen Burnie, Md.) fell just short of a double-double, contributing 11 points and nine rebounds.

Bowie State junior Kiara Colston (Burtonsville, Md.) recorded nine points followed by junior Lisa Jing (Laurel, Md.) and freshman Kyaja Williams (Baltimore, Md.) with six and five points respectively. Junior Pere Alexander (Baltimore, Md.) tallied four points and five rebounds while sophomore Lea Whitehead rounded out the Bulldogs scorers with two points.

Winston-Salem State (5-7, 1-1 CIAA) was led in scoring by seniors Taylor Boyd (Saint Louis, Mo.) and Jasmine Carter (Lexington, N.C.) with 12 and 10 points respectively. Senior Trei Torain (Roxboro, N.C.) hauled down a team-high rebounds and Boyd pulled down seven rebounds in the loss.

The Rams led 13-6 after one quarter and went into halftime with a 31-17 advantage over the Bulldogs and shot 59.1 percent from the field (13-of-22) in the first 20 minutes of action. Compare that to Bowie State’s frigid 20 percent first half shooting (7-of-35).

The Bulldogs used a 12-8 third quarter run, trimming the deficit to ten points (39-29) by the 3:08 mark. However, the Rams closed the third quarter with a 10-3 run to take a 48-32 lead into the final quarter.

Bowie State closed the gap back to ten (50-40) with 6:23 remaining in the game and really began to put the clamps on the Rams. A layup by WSSU’s Carter at the 4:49 mark would be the final points for the visitors with the Rams holding a 52-43 lead.

The Lady Bulldogs closed out the final 4:49 with an 11-0 run to snatch a huge victory over the Rams. A pair of free throws and a layup by Clyde closed the margin to 52-47 with 1:58 on the A.C. Jordan Arena clock. Colston sank two free throws and back-to-back layups by Williams, shifted the advantage over to Bowie State for the very first time all afternoon at 53-52 with 27 seconds left in the game. Colston added one final free throw to account for the final margin.

Bowie State women’s basketball hits the road for its next three games, starting with a Saturday (January 14th) conference clash at Saint Augustine’s University. Game time for the Bulldogs and Lady Falcons is 5:30 p.m.

Try These Fatigue-Fighting Foods

Have trouble getting started in the morning?
Feel sluggish in the afternoon?
Ready to crash come evening?
You're not alone.

Many people, especially women, are constantly suffering from a lack of energy. Fatigue can be caused by a number of different factors, but for many people, poor nutrition is to blame.

Since food is the body's fuel, how well you're able to perform during the day may be directly related to what foods you fill up with during meal and snack time.

When it comes to energy levels, foods and drinks that play the biggest role are carbohydrates, protein, water, and caffeine.

Here's how to include them in your diet:

Carbs for Energy
Your body needs some carbs. Yes, you heard it right. Carbs!

A combination of complex and simple carbs is what to aim for to get maximum benefit. Complex carbs are slower to burn and include foods like whole grains and starchy vegetables (squash, potatoes, carrots, and pumpkin). Whole grains that are high in fiber are what you need for sustained, long-lasting energy. Look for bread that contains two to three grams of fiber per slice.

For a healthy dose of simple carbs, stick with fresh, whole fruits.

Protein for Stamina
While carbs supply energy, protein is responsible for releasing the energy.

Protein is also essential for cell growth, the transport of nutrients and hormones through the body, healthy muscles, and a properly working immune system.

Be sure to eat a source of protein at each meal, whether lean meat, fish, poultry, beans, eggs, soy, nuts, or low-fat dairy.

Water for Refreshment
Essential to survival, water is also essential for energy.

When you consider that two-thirds of your body is made of water, you're reminded how important water is to health and wellness. Water helps to control your temperature, helps you digest food, lubricates your organs, and plays a major role in creating energy molecules.

If you're depleted of water, you probably feel depleted of energy. If you're dehydrated, you'll feel completely dragged out. Without enough water, your body will work overtime to re-hydrate itself instead of producing energy.

Caffeine for Stimulation
Caffeine is a stimulant that works by exaggerating the effects of your natural hormones, causing your heart to beat faster and your breathing to increase, making you feel more alert.

Perhaps you're one of the millions of people who drink one or more cups of coffee in the morning. If so, you know the powerful effect caffeine has to jumpstart your energy level.

Besides coffee, caffeine is also found in tea, sodas, herbs, and chocolate. Be aware that too much caffeine can make you feel jittery, interfere with your sleep, and cause dehydration.

Additional Tips
Keep in mind that overeating, no matter what food, may cause sluggishness.

Instead of three large meals, try eating several small meals (don't forget breakfast!) throughout the day to give you constant bursts of energy.

Too much alcohol or a vitamin deficiency is often to blame for low energy levels. For women, a dragged out feeling could be caused by anemia (low iron) due to their monthly menstruation.

If you still feel fatigued and lethargic after eating a well-balanced diet, contact a food professional or your physician. Stress, medications, diseases, sleep problems, or lack of exercise may be to blame, and getting these under control will get your energy level back where it belongs.

I filmed this learn-by-doing video for you.

It's called "How to Box Squat" and I think you'll like it.

In short, the box squat is superior to the traditional squat because it "turns off" the elastic effect most folks experience when you bounce at the bottom of a classic squat.

Because you actually stop your motion at the bottom of the box squat, you build more starting strength.

This move is also excellent if you have nagging knee pain and think you can't ever squat again.

Why does it help with pain?

Mainly because you can position your feet so you maintain a vertical shin angle.

Fitness is most easily understood by examining its components--cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance and flexibility.

Cardiovascular endurance is the body's ability to do large muscle work, i.e. moving the body over a period of time. This ability is dependent on the cardiovascular system's ability to pump blood and deliver oxygen through your body. Cardiovascular endurance should be a central component of your overall fitness program. Improving cardiovascular endurance increases your supply of oxygen and energy to your body. It also decreases your risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and other life-threatening diseases.

When a heart is well-conditioned, it is like any other muscle--it becomes stronger and more efficient. A normal heart beats at a rate of approximately 70 beats per minute at rest or about 100,000 beats a day. The well-conditioned heart can actually beat as few as 40 times a minute at rest or approximately 50,000 beats per day. A well-conditioned heart conserves energy, and can supply oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body with half the effort.

Strength is the ability of a muscle or group of muscles to exert an amount of force, typically in a one-time burst of effort. Weight-lifting (or "resistance training") is a classic example of strength-training because it increases muscle strength and mass, as well as bone strength, by placing more strain on muscles and bones than they are used to. When you lift weights, muscles are forced to meet that challenge by generating more force-generating proteins to feed the "fibers" that grow during exercise.

Most muscles have a combination of two types of fibers that are challenged during strength-training activities: Fast-twitch fibers provide the explosive force needed for weight-lifting or activities such as sprint racing. Slow-twitch fibers are for endurance, such as the ability for muscle to withstand fatigue. Most muscles have a 50-50 blend of fast-and slow-twitch fibers, but others have an advantage one way or the other. When you make muscles work harder, you actually tear these fibers. As they rebuild, they get stronger and bigger, resulting in harder, tighter and larger muscles.

Muscle Endurance is the ability to resist fatigue and continue to exercise over long periods of time. While strength-training is needed to maintain muscle strength, endurance training is required to achieve stamina. Muscular endurance is the ability of muscles to continue working strong without rest, such as the ability of a quarterback to throw long pass after pass.

Flexibility is the ability of joints and muscles to achieve a full range of motion. This results in the preventing injuries and helps keep your body feel comfortable after exercise. Despite popular opinion, there's no evidence that you should lose flexibility as you build muscle.

Unfortunately, there is truth that the natural aging process can rob you of muscular strength, endurance and flexibility--if you don't maintain them. That's why a regular fitness regimen becomes increasingly important as you age.

I wasn’t really looking for a change when I came to Hitchfit. A friend of mine asked me if I would want to try the program with him and I agreed, why not? What I didn’t realize is what a change it would be and how bad I needed it. I am an ex MMA fighter so I’ve been in shape before but Micah opened my eyes to a “lifestyle” I had never experienced. I am dad to four great kids and with sports, activities, and a busy kid schedule I made excuses and didn’t stay on top of my fitness and eating, Hitchfit changed that. Micah laid out a fitness and eating program that works and is easy to follow and accomplish on a busy day to day basis. The most important goal I made myself going into this program was to improve myself mentally. I have struggled with depression and anxiety most of my adult life and the eating and exercise in Micah’s plan has given me determination, focus, and clarity I haven’t felt in years. It’s made me a better husband, father, friend, son, person. The Hitchfit programs are a life changer, find the focus, make the changes and they’ll change you.

    (MSNBC Health, September) Some kids love PB&J peanut butter and jelly, of course but as a school lunch day after day, it can be a bore. So spare your child the lunchtime blues by packing some fresh and innovative meals. No time for meal-making during the morning rush? Then pack them the night before. Audrey Cross, a professor of nutrition at Columbia University, offers some simple recipes for fun and nutritious lunches, as shown on NBC's Weekend Today.

    PACKING SCHOOL LUNCHES can be a frustrating chore for parents who want to make something creative and nutritious that their kids will want to eat. A recent survey from Quaker found that 60 percent of parents disagree with their children over what to pack in their lunch boxes, and 70 percent of parents are concerned that kids are eating unhealthy snacks. According to the survey, the snacks kids want most often are chips (72 percent), cookies (72 percent) and candy bars (55 percent). And according to a 1998 study in Consumer Reports, Americans spend more than $5 billion a year on nearly 2 billion pounds of luncheon meats. The most popular choice is ham; balogna and turkey tied for second. These three meats account for more than 2/3 of the lunch meat market.

    This inevitable pattern results in the same old thing: sandwiches, or sending kids off to school with money to buy their lunch. Sandwiches can quickly become boring and predictable, and letting kids decide on their own nutritional intake can be dangerous. So below are five meals sure to shake up the made-at-home menu. They'll also give your kids great nutritional value.

    But first, let's do away with one common complaint: It takes too long to make lunches in the morning. Actually, this is a myth. A recent study showed that it actually took the same or less time to make these meals than it did to make the fast-cooking meals that have become so popular.

    Five fun lunches

    THREE LITTLE PIGS

    Make pigs-in-a-blanket using low-fat wieners wrapped in a low-fat crescent roll with mustard dip. Pack with cucumber spears, cherry tomatoes, watermelon cubes and bottled water.

    ITALIAN PASTA

    Serve whole-wheat bow-tie pasta with a primavera topping of sauted eggplant, tomato, squash, basil, garlic, pepper and mushrooms (these veggies are full of flavor, fiber and vitamins and minerals). Pack with a slice of semolina Italian bread (a complex carbohydrate energy source), honeydew melon (rich in fluids), and cranberry juice (fortified with vitamin C)

    BURRITO LUNCH

    Burrito means little burro and it's a perfect name because these rolled-up tortillas carry an entire meal inside. Fill your burrito with:

    • Mashed beans (excellent source of fiber, iron, B vitamins)
    • Chopped lettuce (fiber)
    • Diced tomatoes (lycopene & vitamin A)
    • Shredded cheese (calcium & protein)
    Pack with baked tortilla chips, mango or papaya cubes tossed with lime juice (to keep them from discoloring) and orange juice (vitamin C).

    ROASTED VEGGIE POCKETS

    Roast squash, eggplant, mushrooms or your choice of veggies over a grill, then stuff into a whole-wheat pita. Add a small container of plain yogurt for topping. Pack with cantaloupe cubes, a cereal bar (for energy and calcium), and chocolate milk.

    CHICKEN KEBOBS

    On 4-inch-long kebob sticks, alternate precooked chicken cubes, halved small red potatoes, red pepper and broccoli. Add a small container of dip such as nonfat plain yogurt with dill. Pack with some colorful fruit a kiwi and peach compote is a good choice and orange juice.

    More great lunch ideas

    • Leftovers make great lunches, too. Older kids often have access to a microwave in their school cafeteria so they can heat up home-cooked meals. Just pack the leftovers in a microwaveable container and they can nuke it at lunchtime.
    • To keep lunches safe till eating time, refrigerate them overnight. Then pack them in thermal containers or use a frozen fruit juice box to keep them cold until meal time.
    • For smaller children, make all ingredients bite-size no cutting should be required. Finger foods are also favorites of kids: cutting vegetables and fruits into finger-size pieces makes them more fun and easier to eat. Dips are also a favorite for children. Use herb dips for veggies or spiced dips (nonfat yogurt with cinnamon) for apple slices.
    • And remember, adults may want to pack their lunches, too. Homemade lunches are much healthier than most quick-foods, and they actually save time in the long run. Just compare the time it takes to make these tasty lunches (not much) with the time it takes to go out and grab lunch.
