Flu Shots - There's A Better Way


By: Ron Sauciron Influenza (the flu) is an extremely contagious viral infection of the upper respiratory tract. The virus causes an acute infection of the nose, throat, lungs, middle ear, and bronchial tubes. It is generally an illness of the winter season and is easily spread from person to person by coughing and sneezing. The virus then enters the body through the eyes, nose, or mouth. There are more than 200 strains of the virus which are constantly changing so flu shots have not been very effective. Symptoms of the flu closely resemble the symptoms of the common cold. They include fatigue, coughing, sneezing, headache, body aches, and fever. Oftentimes when fever develops, you may feel extremely hot followed by a period of shivering cold. You may also feel nauseous, weak, and lethargic. The common cold only lasts for 7 to 10 days. The flu can last up to 12 or more days followed by an additional week of recovery time. If you are younger than age 65 with a healthy immune system, you may still contract the flu virus but it will not be life threatening. But if you are over age 65 or have a depressed immune system, contracting the flu can be very serious. Over 25,000 people die from flu related conditions every year. People over age 65 often experience serious respiratory infections like pneumonia after coming down with the flu. You fall into a high risk group if you have a weak immune system or if you have a heart or serious lung condition regardless of your age. The best defense against the flu virus is to keep your immune system functioning at peak efficiency throughout the year.

Supplements for Immune Health

1. Vitamin A is a potent antioxidant that strengthens your immune system. Take 15,000 IU daily, 10,000 IU if you are pregnant.
2. Beta-Carotene, 15,000 IU, should be taken with Vitamin A.
3. Zinc lozenges should be taken as soon as flu symptoms appear.
4. Vitamin C with bioflavonoids strengthens the immune system. Take 5000mg to 20,000mg per day. Excessive Vitamin C can cause diarrhea so start out slowly.
5. Garlic supplementation has antiviral and antibacterial ingredients. The Kyolic brand is a high quality brand, take 2 caps twice a day.
6. Reishi Mushroom, 2 caps a day fights infection and enhances immune function.
7. Vitamin B complex 100mg plus Selenium 200mg per day aids immunity and the body’s ability to combat infection.
8. Olive Leaf extract promotes immune response and fights numerous types of infection including the flu virus. Follow instructions on the container.
9. Fenugreek has the ability to break-up phlegm and mucus. Slippery Elm aids in their removal from the body. Fever is your body’s defensive mechanism at work. The flu virus cannot function well in warm temperatures so do not attempt to suppress a fever unless it rises above 102 degrees. Do not take Zinc at the same time you consume citrus fruits or juices. Citrus has a tendency to reduce the effectiveness of zinc.

Caution: Consuming alcoholic beverages, even in small amounts, and taking the painkiller acetaminophen (Tylenol, Datril etc.) has been associated with serious liver problems.

Self Defense While Walking

Self defense starts with self awareness. You should always be conscious of what's happening around you. Let's say you are out for your daily exercise walk. I try to walk for twenty minutes during my lunch break from work. I work for a large medical center that advocates this activity by mapping out indoor routes, through the various hallways, tunnels and building connections complete with mileage. If I'm walking indoors due to adverse weather (which is 75% of the time here in the upper Midwest) I do wear my MP3 player. When walking outdoors I never wear my MP3 player. Not only does it block my sense of hearing, but the wires dangling from my ears only broadcasts anyone who is interested that I am essentially deaf. Go ahead and sneak up behind me, pull the van up to the curb and hop out to abduct me.

You could walk with a buddy. Some people find that this helps to keep them on track with their exercise program. I've always felt that if two people are walking together, one of them is not walking to their full aerobic potential, but it is safer. You could walk the dog. This would also be safer, whether it's a small barking dog or a huge intimidating dog. I do, however know of cases where the dog is found later, wandering after the walker goes missing.

So, we're walking alone, outside, no dog, and no MP3 player. Keep your eyes moving. Look at everything. This should become habit. Don't look at the ground as you walk unless you are walking on rough terrain, then just glance down, then back to scanning. Perpetrators are looking for victims with low self esteem, which may be demonstrated by keeping their eyes down. Listen. Hopefully you'll hear bird chirping, a breeze blowing through the trees, perhaps children laughing. Be aware of vehicles driving on the street- are they slowing down as they approach you? Do you hear footsteps? If you hear these last two things turn and look at them. Assess the situation- don't be shy. You have the right to know what's happening around you.

Someone approaches you walking on the sidewalk. They are probably just out walking also. Make eye contact with them. Don't stare at them, they may find that confrontational-- just what we want to avoid. I like to give them the "tight smile" and if I feel real friendly, even a quick nod. If they say, "Hey", I say, "hey"-- then I look away. They should anticipate that at my pace I'm walking for exercise-- no time to chat. That should be the end of it. It someone is running toward me, in front or behind, I cross the street. If they follow-- either the walker or the runner-- it may be time to exercise some techniques. I know many techniques, I teach them, and I practice them. I am confident that I could defend myself against one or two perpetrators.

I think everyone should have a self defense plan. Studying a martial art can be helpful, some more than others. At the very least being a martial artist can help build fitness, discipline and self esteem. Some martial arts are more sport and some purely self defense. Knowledge of pressure points is also useful; there are a lot of them.

Should you carry weapons? I wouldn't carry a weapon I wasn't proficient with and willing to use. Make sure you know that you would use it if confronted! If you carry a weapon and it is taken from you, it will be used against you! A personal alarm is a handy item to have. They emit a squealing sound of up to 130 decibels- enough to be heard up to a quarter mile away. Because the bad guy does not want the added attention, this is probably enough of a deterrent to chase him away without being something that could be used against you. Have it ready to use, though. It's not any good to floating down in the black hole of the bottom of your purse! Some of these personal alarms can also be used on door knobs and used for home security as well.

Self awareness and preparedness are the essence of self defense for all occasions. In a perfect world we would not have to worry about this. This is not a perfect world.

Day Thirty-five Is Coming

It's easy to believe when we're getting good breaks, our health is improving, our child is turning around. The test comes when you don't see any sign of what you're believing for. You're working hard, but doors aren't opening. You're praying, but the medical report isn't improving. You're doing the right thing, but your marriage isn't getting better. You know God put the promise in your heart, but there's no sign of it happening. If you saw a little improvement, you could see that what you're doing is helping. But many times before a promise comes to pass, you have to go through a season of silence when you don't see anything changing. This is when many people get discouraged and give up.

The apostle Paul says, "Let us not get weary in well doing, for in due season we shall reap if we faint not" (Galatians 6:9). It doesn't say you might reap, or there's a good chance you'll reap, or that some of the time you'll reap. No, God says that if you won't get tired of doing the right thing, if you won't let what you don't see talk you out of what you know, you will reap in due season.
In the Scripture, the life of a believer is compared to an eagle. It's interesting that for thirty-five days, parent eagles sit on their eggs to keep them warm. They never feel the baby eaglets kick, and the eggs never grow any bigger. There's no sign of life. I'm sure a parent eagle could think, "I wish it would just move a little or grow a bit." But day after day the parent sits, unmoved by what's not changing. On day thirty-five, after no sign of life, suddenly the eaglet starts pecking on the shell and is hatched.
Quit being discouraged because you don't see anything happening. Nothing's wrong with the promise. Trust the process. While you're waiting, God is bringing it all together in secret. Like the eaglet, some things have to develop in the dark, in secret. You have to believe when there's no sign on the outside that what's on the inside is really alive. That promise God gave you, that egg so to speak, is not going to move or grow. You may not see any sign of life until your due season, when suddenly the egg cracks open. God is saying, "Go sit on it. It's still alive. Don't let the circumstances fool you. You have to walk by faith and not by sight. Day thirty-five is coming!"
