Blue on Blue - How police deal with the mentally ill (The Feed) and Depression-Diseases

The voices said stand in a shadow the police can't get you, but they could, and they put me in a van and took me away," Andy Park goes behind the scenes to see how NSW police are trained to deal with the mentally ill. Tactical Workouts

Depression-Diseases
By: David Jones

Most people feel depressed occasionally. There is no question of their being mentally ill, though, if they continue with a daily routine and gradually recover. The difference between "feeling depressed" and having the mental illness known as depression is that people who are actually ill cannot lift themselves out of their misery. Their depression persists, deepens, and eventually interferes with their ability to lead normal lives. If you or others in your family have occasional periods of low spirits that disappear after a few days or weeks, you have no cause for concern. The symptoms of true depressive illness are described below. There are two main types of depressive illness. One type is caused by an extreme reaction to a specific emotional blow such as the death of someone you loved, the end of a marriage or love affair, or a financial loss. Neurotic people sometimes overreact to such misfortunes, and the result may be a depressive illness. The other type of depression usually occurs without apparent cause. It may result from hormonal changes after childbirth or may be associated with schizophrenia .

There are periods of particular susceptibility to depressive illness in almost everyone's lifetime. Late adolescence, middle age, and the years after retirement are such periods. Many people find the transition from adolescence to diseases adulthood difficult, especially when there are intense family conflicts or educational or work pressures. Loss of fertility or virility in middle age may seem like loss of sexuality, a loss that would trigger depression in many people. A person in late middle age may brood over the realization that he or she can advance no further in a career.

Depressive illness among elderly people is extremely common. This may be related to many factors, including the death of friends, the physical limitations of old age, and the realization that death is now in the foreseeable future.

Every severe depression is probably accompanied by a chemical change that affects the way the brain functions.

What are The Symptoms?

Symptoms of depressive illness include not only overriding melancholy but also physical changes. It is common for the depressed person to become unconcerned or apathetic about the outside world. He or she may also lose interest in or have trouble with eating, sleeping and sex. Sometimes indigestion, constipation and headaches appear. Some depressed people have severe psychological symptoms. They may lose touch with reality, may feel guilty and worthless without cause, may believe that they are being persecuted or that their bodies are rotting away, and may have hallucinations. Sometimes acute anxiety accompanies the depression, and the resultant restlessness and agitation may mask the more expected symptoms.

Intensity of symptoms often varies with the time of day. Typically, a depressed person wakes up early in a sad mood that brightens as the day progresses. But some people have the worst symptoms at night. As the illness progresses, depression may deepen until it never lifts. The person then becomes totally withdrawn, and may spend most of the time huddled in bed.

What are The Risks?

About 15 per cent of the population is likely to experience at least one period of depression severe enough to require medical help, though the symptoms may not be specifically identified as a depressive illness. Some types of depression tend to run in families.

The gravest risk of depression is suicide, the last resort of someone who finds life unbearable . In rare cases the illness can unbalance a person's mind so much that they feel forced to kill others as well as themselves, to spare them the agony of being alive. Although they are too common in all age groups including the young, depression and suicide are particular problems of the elderly, and sometimes depression can resemble and be confused with senility . This confusion is particularly unfortunate since depression is often reversible. Thus a depressed elderly person may be thought to have senile dementia and get no treatment for his or her depression.

What Should be Done?

If you recognize the symptoms of increasing depressive illness (not just a passing sadness) in yourself, see a physician now. Do not be ashamed to tell him or her about your fears. If you recognize the symptoms in other people, try to persuade them to accept medical help.

What is The Treatment?

Self-help: If you think a mild form of depression is lasting too long or beginning to deepen, a vacation, active sports, or a hobby may help you pull out of it. It may not be possible to do this, however, if you have a depressive illness, so if these measures fail, see your physician. If a member of your family seems to be severely depressed, try gentle but firm persuasion to get him or her to a doctor. Threats of suicide should be considered an emergency.

Professional help: Treatment depends on the type and severity of symptoms. If you go to your family physician with symptoms of depression, he or she may refer you to a specialist for treatment. Treatment may consist of medications, psychotherapy, or a combination of both. Antidepressants, which are often used in treatment of depression, can usually begin to relieve a mild case within two to three weeks. In severe cases, especially when there is a risk of suicide, the physician may advise hospitalization, because in a hospital your symptoms can be monitored, you can be prevented from harming yourself, and drug treatment and psychotherapy can be closely supervised. In rare cases of persistent illness, electroshock therapy (EST) may be recommended.

If you are treated in a mental hospital, the goal of treatment is not only to cure your depression but also to prepare you for a return to normal life.

What are The Long-Term Prospects?

People who have a depressive illness almost always respond well to treatment. Unfortunately, some types of depression tend to recur. Yet many people who have repeated attacks of depressive illness manage to function by getting treatment in the early stages of each attack.

Go for Revelation Knowledge

Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord.
2 Peter 1:2

If you were to look up the Greek word that’s translated “knowledge” in that scripture, you’d find out that it means more than just a mental understanding of something, more than the kind of knowledge that can be gained through your senses. It means exact knowledge. Knowledge that’s been revealed directly to your heart by the Spirit of God. I call it revelation knowledge.
The lack of that kind of knowledge has caused more faith failures than anything else I know. That’s because most Christians believe the Word with their minds, but they haven’t meditated on it enough for it to “light up” in their hearts. If they had, that Word would absolutely revolutionize their lives. Nothing in heaven or earth would be able to shake them loose from it.
I know a widow who got hold of that kind of revelation one afternoon. She’d been meditating in the scriptures that say if you’re a widow, God Almighty has taken His place as your provider and leader of your household.
She’d been feeling a little sorry for herself up until then. But when she received the revelation that God was actually head of her household now, she started talking to Him like she would a husband.
“I’m telling You, Lord, the plumbing in this house is pitiful. Will You please get it fixed?” she said. From that moment on, she never had any more trouble with her plumbing.
If you need something from God, determine right now that you’re going to do what that widow did. Determine that you’re going to meditate the Word until you get a revelation like that. Keep that Word before you until you receive a revelation of Jesus as your healer or your deliverer or your financier—whatever you need Him to be. Don’t settle for a shallow mental understanding of Him. Get a deep revelation and His grace will be multiplied to you!

The Women’s National Football Conference (WNFC) is a groundbreaking organization. We exist to create and foster an environment for female athletes to sustain healthy lifestyles through playing, coaching and participating in American football at the highest level. At present the sport of women's tackle football is disjointed. The market does not have an option for owners, players, and fans that have a higher standard for women and girls in football. For years, it has been ok to have women and teams solely carry the financial burden to play this sport that countless men and boys have access to for free; without a plan or significant effort to change that dynamic. Over the past decade, women’s football leagues have collected over $3 million dollars combined from aspiring female football players and their teams. No valuable investments, financial return or significant advancements have been made with these dollars. Our purpose, principals, and plans are rooted in the development of the most pristine women’s football product in the world so that those times eventually come to an end. How to Win the Game of Angles by Hitting Cross-Court Shots

“The rule in life is like with tennis: One point won’t lose you the match, but if you let it get to you, it will.”
This tennis quote is one I always urge young tennis players to take to heart. When playing tennis, you can’t be afraid to take chances. If you are consistently hitting the ball right back towards the center of the court, the game becomes monotonous for yourself and easy for your opponent. Once a player knows what their opponent is trying to do, there are no secrets anymore. A cross-court shot can be one of many plays to keep them guessing.

More Court to Aim For

It may not always seem this way, but on a standard tennis court there is a lot of room to hit at. With this said, one of my top reasons for hitting cross-court shots is to take advantage of this open real estate. When you hit one straight down the line, there isn’t a whole lot of room for error. However, this distance increases when you look for cross-court shots. This difference is even greater when you take the floor for a doubles match. Even though this point may sound a little elementary, it can pay significant dividends for the mental aspect of a match. When you realize that you have a few extra feet when opting to hit it cross-court rather than down the line, isn’t it safe to say you might attempt these shots more often?

Change Arm Angles

In order to hit cross-court shots consistently, you have to adopt a different contact point and alignment than the one used for down the line shots. If you keep both of these the same, then you’re merely hitting cross-court shots by changing the swing angle with your wrist. When you do this, it becomes difficult to hit accurate shots consistently and thus unforced errors will start to grow in numbers. The best way to prevent this from happening is to change the contact point. Naturally, players will hit in-front inside balls to the cross court. Meanwhile, balls that are farther back and away from your body will tend to go down the line. With this known, the best way to hit cross-court shots is to position yourself so you’ll hit the ball a little earlier and closer in to the body. Proceeding in this approach will allow you to hit cross courts efficiently and effectively.
Occasionally a cross-court shot will take the form of a volley. CoachTube provides videos designed to help players master this skill.

Disguise Your Shot

The Problem
In a decent amount of the sports articles I’ve written, I always discuss this concept of ‘deception.’ Athletes are constantly trying to get an idea of what their opponent is thinking. If you are able to do this, you’re in a position of always being a step ahead. You know what move is coming before it happens. If your opponent is successful in breaking down your game, your chances of a victory quickly diminish. That is why you need to cleverly disguise your intentions. This applies perfectly for the difference between cross-court and down the line shots. While I’ll break down this difference later, you don’t want your opponent to know, based on your alignment, whether the ball is going cross-court or down the line.
The Solution
It is not recommended that you try to disguise all your shots, because it can lead to a loss in maximum power caused by overthinking. When you do find an opportunity to hit cross-court, you will align yourself as if you’re going for a down the line shot to deceive your opponent. Then position yourself a little further from the ball, and just as you begin the swing, start to pull yourself in and complete the cross-court. Like I mentioned, don’t try to disguise all of your shots, or else you will end up affecting your game in a negative way. The best advice is to only try to disguise the ones where you have extra time. Your opponent is already in a bad position if you have a decent amount of time to make the return, but this can ultimately finish the point!

Disrupt Rhythm

As a tennis player myself, I understand the value that can be had from getting in a rhythm. Particularly when it’s your service game, you can quickly get in a groove when you’re getting your shots in. This can be further exemplified when your opponent isn’t putting a lot of pressure on you. When they’re simply hitting returns straight down the court, the game comes much easier. Cross-court shots are not only smarter shots, but they allow you to play to the weaknesses of your opponent. The majority of players are either going to be weaker with their forehand or backhand. During the early stages of the game, you need to find out which. Then, as the match progresses, you can consistently hit to their weak side, even when it requires a cross-court shot. This will keep them on-guard and hopefully prevent any momentum from occurring.

Comparison Between Down-the-Line Shots and Cross-Court

In tennis, there are two primary types of passing shots: down-the-line and cross-court. A passing shot is essentially a groundstroke that makes the opposing player move to their right or left. A down-the-line never crosses the centerline and goes in a parallel direction of where the player is standing. Meanwhile, the cross-court shot crosses the centerline and goes from the left to right or vice versa.
If you intend on hitting a down-the-line shot off a cross-court, it requires a great deal of force. This is because you have to redirect the ball in a different direction. In addition, it helps to move your body into the ball and align properly so the wrists won’t be doing all the work. When you hit a cross-court shot, you run into similar issues. It is vital to position yourself appropriately to prevent any inconsistencies. Cross-courts require a hit that is more in front. Understanding how to position yourself is vital to hitting consistently on all passing shots.

Take Advantage and Capitalize

Cross-court shots tend to be safer with the additional court to aim for. Even if you might be hesitant to hit cross-court often, I recommend slowing working it into your game. Excelling at tennis is largely centered on one’s ability to develop an all-around game. Just like a baseball pitcher, the more tools you have in your arsenal, the better player you’ll be. Hitting cross-court is yet another one of these tools every player should know.

Megan’s Story and Hitch Fit Online Personal Training Review:
“I have been active my whole life playing sports, being outdoors, being in the gym.  The past couple of years I was consistently in the gym 5-6 days a week lifting weights and doing cardio trying to get in better shape as the older I got, the harder that seemed to be.  I wasn’t gaining weight, but I also wasn’t seeing any changes, everything was just remaining consistent and I felt stuck.
I had been on the fence about joining Hitch Fit for years, following the success stories, even going online and looking at programs.  It wasn’t until a friend of mine from work went through the Lose Weight program and showed me her before and after photos that I was 100% in and signed up the following week to get started.  I loved watching my body change and was excited to check my progress each week, the only thing I regretted was not signing up years ago when I started looking!
Learning how to train efficiently while in the gym and how to fuel my body with the right foods was huge for me, definitely the game changer I needed. I like to cook and enjoyed coming up with new, healthy recipes that fit my program that I will continue to keep as staples moving forward. I developed such a great routine of prepping my meals each week and planning out my workouts, that it is just a way of life for me now. On top of feeling so much better about myself, I have PR’d in every race I’ve ran since losing weight which is a huge accomplishment for me! I’m looking forward to going through another transformation soon and continuing to watch my body change! ”

"The 10 Commandments Of Weight Loss Success"
By: Frank Smoot

A major new clinical research study, involving more than 14,000 people and spanning some 16 years, has allowed us to identify what does--and what definitely does not--lead to safe, struggle-free, lasting weight loss. As a result, we now know "The 10 Commandments Of Weight Loss Success."

Commandment #1: Get The Facts Before You Act!

Be certain that whatever you do is based on real data, not on hype and wild claims. Recent research has revealed a wealth of new insights into what works--and what doesn't. Some prime examples:

- An astonishing 96% of weight loss attempts fail.

- We gain back a tragic 95% of all the pounds we lose.

- Dieting is worse than useless. It's counterproductive.

- Relying on will power often leads to weight gain.

- Most of the reasons we're overweight have nothing to do with food or diet.

- But, not being aware of these simple truths, people turn to food-based approaches like dieting--and fail by the millions.

Commandment #2. Set Realistic Weight Loss Goals.

Your "target weight" must be based in reality, not fantasy. If you're trying to look like Barbie or Ken (or Pamela Anderson or "Arnold,") you are in Fantasyland--and in danger as well. Make your goal to be healthy...not "perfect."

Commandment #3. Beware Diet Industry "Solutions."

Failed diets cause tremendous amounts of unnecessary suffering. Yet we still turn to dieting and other heavily-promoted "solutions" because the Diet Industry still pushes them relentlessly. Climbing out from under their avalanche of misinformation is "Weight Loss Job #1."

Commandment #4. Understand That Weight Loss Success Is NOT About Food

Being overweight is actually not "the problem," but a physical symptom of a non-physical problem. In other words, the excess weight you can see is only a symptom of a problem you can't see. We fail because we can't solve problems by attacking symptoms, but only by dealing with the real, root causes of obesity.

Commandment #5. Know Who You Are Losing Weight For

Who are you really trying to please or impress by losing weight? The only acceptable person to lose weight for is you. If your goal is to please or impress anyone else, you are already in trouble. Getting to your healthiest weight is one thing in life that really should be "all about you."

Commandment #6. Get Your Whole Being Involved

"Body-only" or "food-oriented" weight loss approaches are doomed from the start. For lasting weight loss, you must involve your "whole" being -- your body, mind, and spirit. See weight loss success as a 3-legged stool. If even one leg is missing, the stool will collapse--no matter how sturdy the other two legs are. To succeed, you must involve and align all three aspects of yourself toward your weight loss goals.

Commandment #7. Be Very Careful What You Put In Your Mouth

Diet drugs, pills, and "metabolizers" are, at best short-term fixes. At worst, they can be deadly. Weight loss pills not only breed dependency, but the minute you stop, you "Yo-Yo" back to your original weight--or higher.

And just because something is "natural" doesn't mean it's healthy. Nature is full of things that can kill humans and other animals. (Amazon tribes count on it!)

Commandment #8. Have A Realistic Time Frame

Trying to lose more than 1-2 pounds per week sets you up to get sick, to fail, to be miserable, and probably all of the above. "Losing 10 pounds in 2 days" is very unlikely and very unhealthy. You didn't put on your unwanted pounds in a hurry. Don't try to take them off that way.

Commandment #9. You MUST "Tune Up" Your Colon For Long-Term Health

Poor colon function is epidemic, dangerous, and is a primary factor in excess weight. Too little exercise, too much protein, fat, sugar, salt, alcohol, nicotine, and not much fiber adds up to lousy colon function--causing discomfort, sluggish digestion, poor nutrient assimilation, heartburn, gas, allergies, even cancer.

Fortunately, colon function is easy, inexpensive (and very rewarding) to correct. (For more details about the crucial importance of colon health, please read the article here, or send an e mail to frank@coachfranksmoot.com)

Commandment #10. See Effort and Struggle As "Red Flags"

Fact: Nearly everyone who stays at their target weight year after year uses a proven "success recipe" that makes success struggle-free and virtually effortless. Only a few researchers are aware of this. And you can be sure you won't hear it from the Diet Industry.

American Anti-Terrorist Campaigns 1908 - 2008
By: Bernard Fleury

The capture of badly wounded Papa Faustino Ablen, his subsequent recovery, trial for brigandage (thievery, abduction, extortion, etc.,) and his execution in August of 1907 broke the back of the Dios-Dios Pulahanes as a major insurgency.
His principal sub-chiefs, Felipe Ydos, Espiridion Rota, Afroniano Fernandez and other sub-chiefs were also hanged. Lesser officers were sentenced to long prison terms. Recruits received lesser punishments.

Many Pulahan members from Leyte and Samar, to put some distance between themselves and their former enemies they had preyed upon, moved to Mindanao. They continued to live in small remote communes and to practice their apocalyptic beliefs of the "golden heaven" they’d seen in Ablen’s dagger handle.

Continuing government harassment resulted in more conflicts such as the 1924 Colorum Uprising in Surigao. To this year 2008, the influence of the Pulahanes is still found in Christian sects throughout Mindanao.1.

Millenarianism took root in the Philippines as a result of oppressive Spanish policies during the colonial period. The Dios-Dios movement was really driven by a desire to radically change their society. They awaited the appearance of the "great city" they saw in Ablen’s bolo handle, the resurrection of the dead, the victory over their enemies through their magical prayers and amulets. At first they just withdrew to their mountain retreats and lived passively.

When America defeated Spain in the Spanish American War, the Pulahanes helped the Philippine insurgency under Emilio Aguinaldo y Famy in the anti-colonial American struggle. But after Aguinaldo surrendered they continued their insurgency until the capture of Faustino Ablen. They targeted not only Americans but also their fellow Filipinos who had been their enemies before the Americans came. It is interesting to note that the Pulahanes, as a group never (to this day) surrendered.2.

America’s Future – The Terrorist Threat In The Late 20th And Early 21st Centuries
Newspaper and television reports continue to allude to Al Qaeda Terrorist cells in the United States. Some accounts center them in radical Islamic Mosques led by Fundamentalist Imams like the Mosques in Los Angeles and San Diego among others. Islamic terrorism is a serious threat not only to American and West European values but also to the rest of the Islamic World, most of which do not hold Fundamentalist radical views but are terrified (with some exceptions) to take a public stand against the Al Qaeda and Taliban brand of Islam because Islamic terrorists have demonstrated in Iraq and Afghanistan that they do not hesitate to blow up fellow Muslims who do not support their radical beliefs.
As many as seventy-seven thousand terrorist targets, are currently listed, with our seaport areas having major vulnerability.
Reform of our terrorist-fighting infrastructure is an urgent ongoing endeavor in which both candidates for President in the fall of 2008 endorse though each of them has his own specific plan that differs from the other candidates plan.

Conclusion

The American Anti-Terrorist Campaign of the first eight years of the twenty-first century came gradually. It received its most significant "push" with the bombing of the twin towers in New York City in September 2001.
This time we have groups like the Taliban and Al Qaeda. They too have their charismatic leaders, principal of whom is Osama Bin Laden.
Bin Laden is similar to Aguinaldo and Ablen in several ways. He wants to "free" his people who are Conservative, Fundamentalist Muslims, to preserve their way of life and culture, from the "infidels" who collectively are non-Muslim or what he considers to be liberal Muslims who have betrayed their faith.
Bin Laden also has the support of many Muslims, both the elite and wealthy as well as ordinary persons of modest means.
Like Ablen, Bin Laden promises his people who give their lives for the cause a glorious life in heaven.
But there the similarity between the American Anti-Terrorist campaigns of 1900-1902 and 1903-07 in the Philippines, and the 2001-2008 (and still ongoing) end.
The current Anti-Terrorist Campaign is much broader in scope and intensity. Unlike Aguinaldo and Ablen whose focus was to "free" the Philippines from the American invaders, Bin Laden wants freedom from all non-Muslim political and religious ideas and to impose his version of Islam on the entire world.
Many more people have been and are being killed. Many more nations are involved. It is really a clash of cultures, radically different ways of life. It is a struggle, the end of which, no one can accurately predict.
The current struggle grows increasingly more and more worldwide, and no one has yet found the way to end it and restore peace.
We are in the midst of another American led Anti-Terrorist Campaign but this one is a world-changing event in human history!

We have to remember what God has done in our life. We have to get in agreement with God and say, “Thank You, God, for who You made me to be. You made me to be more than a conqueror in Christ Jesus. I’m an overcomer because You back me up, because I have Your Word in me, and I will overcome this.” [Video Below] This is message #773, "Encourage Yourself", by Victoria Osteen. God Says, “I’ve Got This”

Post by Joel Osteen on August 31, 2018

When our son, Jonathan, was going off to college for his freshman year, as parents we were concerned about how everything would work out. Would he get the right classes, would he meet the right friends, would he be overwhelmed? He'd never been in a large school setting, and his college has seventy thousand students. Victoria really wanted him to make a good friend or two at the start. When she was at the parents' orientation for the freshman students, she met another mother whose son was in the communications department like Jonathan, and she really liked this lady. Jonathan was in the students' orientation, so she sent this text: "Try to find a guy named Charlie. I met his mom. I think you'll like him." Jonathan read it and thought, "There are thousands of students in orientation. How would I ever find him?"

Jonathan went into his next session in a room crowded with hundreds of students and sat in a random chair. At one point, the instructor told them to take a minute and meet somebody. Jonathan turned to the guy sitting next to him and noticed a folder with a name written very small on it—"Charlie." Jonathan said, "I think my mother just met your mother. Are you Charlie?" He said, "Yes, I am. You must be Jonathan. My mother texted me to look for you." Out of thousands of students, they were sitting next to each other. God was saying to us as parents, "I've got this. I'm going to watch after your children." It's one thing when God is good to you, but when He's good to your children, there's a whole new level of gratefulness. Jonathan and Charlie became good friends, and four years later, they sat by each other at school one last time at their graduation. Charlie told Jonathan, "Let's finish like we started, side by side."
Are you worrying about your children, stressed out over your job, discouraged because of a disappointment, thinking it's not going to work out? We need to live with the attitude of the psalmist David. He had all kinds of things come against him—people, armies, even his own family—and yet he could say, "The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear?" (Psalm 27:1). David would say to you, "God's got this. He's directing your steps. He's bringing the right people across your path and your children's paths. He has beauty for the ashes, and right now He's working behind the scenes. Dare to believe, dare to trust. Be still and know that He is God. He has you in the palms of His hands."
