BOWIE, Md. – It wasn't pretty, but Bowie State University did just enough to claim a 64-59 win over visiting Saint Augustine’s University in the A.C. Jordan Arena on Monday (1/20) evening. The win sets Bowie State’s season record at 12-8 and 4-2 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).

Senior Cameron Hayes (Upper Marlboro, Md.) came off the bench to provide a team-high 15 points to lead Bowie State. Senior David Belle (Hyattsville, Md.) added 13 points while Juwan Smith (Lexington Park, Md.) along with Kani Coles (Baltimore, Md.) contributed 12 and 10 points respectively in the victory.
Saint Augustine’s (5-11 / 0-6 CIAA) was led by Jalen Gaddy (Raleigh, N.C.) with a game-high 16 points followed by Nilous Hodge (Charlotte, N.C.) and Aaron Johnson-Cash (San Francisco, Calif.) with 13 and 11 points respectively. Saint Augustine’s used a 7-4 run to start the second half and took its second lead since 2-0 at 41-40 on a Hodge 3-pointer. The lead would change hands four times over a span of three minutes until a thunderous dunk by Bowie State senior Saiquan Jamison knotted the score at 46-all.
Jamison shifted the advantage back over to Bowie State a short time later and a Smith jumper gave the Bulldogs a little breathing room at 50-46 with 8:41 to go in the contest.
However, the Falcons would not go away as a Karaan Clemons layup followed by a ferocious dunk by Johnson-Cash knotted the score at 50-all just over a minute later.
The Bulldogs scored the next three points as Coles knocked down a pair of free throws and Belle made 1-of-2 free throws to Bowie State on top at 53-50.
Saint Augustine’s Johnson-Cash trimmed the Bowie State lead to 53-52 with 3:36 remaining in the game but that’s as close as the Falcons would get for the rest of the game.

NCAA Basketball Bowie State Men's and Women's Results Vs Fayettville State

Fayetteville State Broncos Top Bowie State’s Bulldogs 70-58 in Non-Conference Matchup

https://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=821775&u=1164047&m=58751&urllink=&afftrack=FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Bowie State University dropped a non-conference contest on Monday night, as the Fayetteville State University Broncos defeated the Bulldogs 70-58. The loss dropped the Bowie State record to 10-8 overall while the Broncos improve to 15-3 on the year.

Similar to the Bulldogs' previous game against Claflin University on Saturday, both teams kept the score reasonably even throughout the first half. The most significant lead of the period didn't come until the 2:30 mark when FSU’s Jalen Seegars knocked down a 3-pointer to extend Fayetteville State's lead to 12.

Bowie State did not regain the lead the entire half, after holding it briefly near the beginning of the game. However, heading into halftime, the Bulldogs held the advantage in points in the paint (16-14) and second-chance points (7-4). Still, the Broncos held 38-29 lead at the break, as they were shooting 54 percent (15-of-28).

Coming out of halftime, the Broncos continued to extend the lead off their first-half momentum. Ty McClain scored on a layup, and Seegars connected on another shot from long distance. As Bowie State struggled to respond with a bucket on their own, the Broncos were looking at a 15-point lead after Mark Burton knocked down a jumper at the 17-minute mark.

Around the ten-minute mark, it was the same story. Seegars hit another 3-pointer, and then Will Brown converted on a slam dunk. Although the lead was as high as 17 at the time, the Bulldogs continued to fight, as Bowie State senior Rinardo Perry (Washington, D.C) converted on back-to-back layups. But again, the Broncos would respond with Darian Dixon hitting a jump shot.

Throughout the final five-minutes, the Broncos put the game away as Bowie State continued to find ways to stop them on defense. For the Bulldogs, senior Juwan Smith (Lexington Park, Md.) led the double-figure scoring attack with 15 points while fellow senior Yohance Fleming (Bowie, Md.) chipped in a personal season-best 13 points. Junior Justin Route (Washington, D.C.) and senior Saiquan Jamison (Upper Marlboro, Md.) both added eight points each in the setback.

As a team, Bowie State shot 37 percent (23-of-62) from the field, 23 percent (3-of-13) from long range and made 69 percent (9-of-13) of its free throws. Fayetteville State shot 50 percent (27-of-54) from the field, 47 percent (8-of-17) from deep, and 44 percent (8-of-18) on free throw attempts.

Bowie State returns on to host Shaw University in a conference matchup on Saturday (January 18) as part of a doubleheader. The Bulldogs and Bears will tipoff at 3 p.m.

Bowie State would not get closer than 15 points as the home team kept their foot on the pedal throughout the third period and maintained a 20-point lead 57-37 going into the final stanza.

Bowie State Pressure Too Much for Chowan in Bulldogs 68-66 Home Finale Win

BOWIE, Md. - The Bulldogs used pressure defense, a Chowan miscue and free throws when it counted in Saturday's 68-66 home finale victory over the visiting Hawks. With the win, Bowie State’s fourth in a row, the Bulldogs improve to 16-10 overall, 12-3 in league play and 6-2 in the division.

“We’re not playing pretty basketball right now but we’re finding ways to win”, said a very happy Bowie State Head Coach Darrell Brooks. “There are things we certainly have to work on … free throw shooting and taking care of the basketball. We wore them down with pressure in the second half and I thought our heart showed through, especially in the second half.”

Junior Rinardo Perry paced the Bulldogs with a team-high 16 points and sophomore Keith Duffin, Jr. recorded 11 points. Junior Saiquan Jamison hauled down a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with eight points.

Bowie State trailed most of the first half but shot fairly well, hitting 46 percent of its shots (12-of-26). The Bulldogs did hold an 8-5 lead after a Duffin 3-point play at the 17:55 mark of the opening half before relinquishing that advantage to the Hawks after a pair of free throws by Chowan’s Timothy Bing at the 13:07 mark.

Chowan (12-12, 5-10 CIAA, 2-6 North) pushed its lead to 29-19 with 6:26 left before halftime. Chowan was outscored 13-8 the remainder of the half and trailed the Hawks 37-32 at intermission.

The Bulldogs closed the gap to 41-40 five minutes into the second half and tied the game at 46-all following a layup by sophomore Justin Route at the 13-minute mark. Bowie State used a 10-1 run to extend its lead to 56-47 after a Perry layup with 9:10 to go in the contest.

With Bowie State leading 58-50 at the 7:08 mark, the Bulldogs offense went cold, and Chowan used an 11-0 run to regain the lead at 61-58 with 2:28 left on the clock.

Perry sank a pair of free throws to pull the Bulldogs within one only to have the Hawks push their lead to 64-60. Jamison made 1-of-2 free throws and junior Cameron Hayes drilled a 3-pointer with 1:02 remaining, tying the game at 64-all.

Chowan’s Trejvon McFail gave the Hawks a two-point lead (66-64) with 29 seconds left after driving to the basket but Bowie State’s Duffin evened the score at the free throw line with 15.9 seconds left in the hotly contested game.

On the ensuing in-bound, Chowan was facing a five second in-bounds call and called a timeout after using their final timeout on the previous possession.  Bowie State was awarded a technical free throw and took the lead 67-66.

Chowan had a chance on the final possession, but the attempt was blocked, and an offensive foul was called.

Perry went 1-2 from the stripe to seal the 68-66 win.

Chowan’s Demetrius Sanders was the games’ leading scorer with 18 points and Michael Kelly and Xavier Young tallied 14 and 11 points respectively for the Hawks.

Bowie State will hit the road for a rematch with division leading Virginia State next Wednesday (February 20). Game time is set for 4:05 p.m. and will be carried on ESPN3.

Alexander’s 23 Points Leads Bowie State Bulldogs to an Easy 645 Home Finale Win Over Chowan

BOWIE, Md – The Bowie State University women’s basketball team picked up their fourth straight win after rolling through Chowan University, 65-45 at the A.C. Jordan Arena on Saturday afternoon. With this win, BSU improves to 20-4 overall and 12-3 in the CIAA, while Chowan moves to 12-13 and 8-7 in conference matchup.

Redshirt senior Pere Alexander had a monster game, leading all scorers with 23 points to go along with eight rebounds and five steals. Junior Kyaja Williams had a solid game with another double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. She also had four steals, was perfect at the foul line (3-of-3), handed out three assists, was credited with four steals and blocked one shot.

Danielle Weldon had a huge game for the Hawks, scoring 20 points to go with her 10 rebounds. Weldon was the only player in double figures for Chowan and their lack of offense cost them the ball game.

Alexander’s layup tied the game at 2-2 after Weldon’s jumper opened the scoring at 8:58. The Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run during the first period and held Chowan to just six points. Weldon was the only offense for the visiting team. During BSU’s run to end the period on top 12-6, junior Dynaisha Christian converted two layups, while the team forced four turnovers.

Freshman Drew Calhoun opened the scoring in the second period with a 3-pointer, but Chowan’s Weldon answered with a layup to cut the lead to 15-8 at 9:22. Junior Shawnkia McCallum’s three pushed the lead to double figures and right after the media timeout, Calhoun hit another three to take the lead up to 13 by the 6:57 mark. BSU quickly put the game out of reach scoring nine points in the final 4:55. Williams’s tip-in with 14 seconds left sent the Bulldogs into the half leading 37-17.

Olivia Gaither’s layup commenced the scoring in the third period, but Christian answered with a layup of her own to extend the Bowie State lead to 39-19 with 9:13 left in the game. Every time Chowan’s offense started coming alive, the Bulldogs had answers.
Weldon continued to add on her stats in the fourth with a layup at 9:33 and after Jordan Pettaway’s turnover, Williams punished the Hawks with a layup. Alexander’s jumper followed by Butler’s layup and McCallum’s jumper built the Bulldogs biggest lead at 61-35 before Brianna Copeland ended the mini run with a jumper at the 4:48 mark. Another Weldon layup follow by a Coker triple, cut the Bowie State lead to 19, but the Hawks would get no closer.

Bowie State dominated Chowan in just about every major stat category except rebounds. The Bulldogs shot 43 percent from the field (23-of-54), made 89 percent of its free throws (16-of-18), outscored the Hawks 32-20 in the paint, converted 11 Chowan turnovers into 21 points and outscored the opponents bench 17-8.

The Bulldogs head to Virginia State for a 2:05 tipoff against the Trojans next Wednesday (February 20) then close the regular season at Elizabeth City State on Saturday (February 23).

Bison’s second half rally comes up short

WASHINGTON (February 16, 2019) – Coach Kevin Nickelberry and the Howard University men’s basketball team erased a 20-point deficit but fell short to the North Carolina AandT State (NCAT) Aggies inside Burr Gymnasium, 85-81.

HU (12-14, 6-5 MEAC) struggled defensively in the first half, allowing nearly 62-percent (24-of-39) from the field, including 50-percent (7-of-14) from beyond the arc.

NCAT’s Amari Hamilton connected on a trey ball and gave the Aggies their largest lead of the game, 35-15, with more than eight minutes before intermission. HU fought back, but found themselves down 18 at the break, 60-42.

After halftime, the Bison came out swinging as they scored 18 unanswered and tied the contest with a made freebie by sophomore Zion Cousins (Upper Marlboro, Md.), 60-60.

“We played with more effort and energy in the second half,” Coach Nickelberry said after the game. “We created turnovers and scored in transition.”

Second-year guards RJ Cole (Union, N.J.) and Kyle Foster (Hampton, Va.) jumped started the Bison’s second half comeback.

Cole finished with 20 points, including 10 after intermission, while Foster connected on a rare four-point play to open the second period.

With more than seven minutes remaining, Hamilton drilled another three-pointer and extended the Aggies’ advantage to eight, 72-64, but Howard refused to go away.

The Bison tied the game at 79 off a layup by redshirt junior Chad Lott (Shreveport, La.) with 1:36 to go, but NCAT’s Aaren Edmead hit the go-ahead jumper with 46 seconds to hold off Howard.

HU reached the foul line 36 times, but only converted 61-percent (22-of-36).

“Our goal was to get to the free throw line,” Nickelberry continued. “We did not reward ourselves with making the shots at the free throw line. I think it changed the game.”

Lott had 17 points, five boards and three assists while junior Charles Williams (Richmond, Va.) added 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Off the bench, Foster produced 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting from behind the arc.

For NCAT (14-11, 9-2 MEAC), Jackson led five Aggies in scoring with 16 points.

The Bison host North Carolina Central in their home finale Monday (Feb. 18) for Senior Night. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
